Reaching the lair of the first Queen
The first boss battle of Aliens Dark Descent pits you against an Alien Queen and this is just the first of such encounters - you'll see more Queens to defeat in the course of the campaign.
- The first Alien Queen appears quite early in the game - at the end of Mission 1 taking place in the Dead Hills colony on Lethe.
- Advance in the mission enough to unlock the objective of finding colonists in the old mine. The entrance to the mine is in the north-western corner of the map. At the location, there is a mine elevator and you need to ride it down.
In the tunnels, expect xenomorphs - pay close attention to the Motion Tracker. You have to reach the locked door from the screenshot. This door leads to the lair and you can open it through a switch nearby.
Preparations before the battle
A warning will be issued to you about an upcoming tough battle, similar to the one seen before the confrontation with the Crusher which took place in the earlier part of the mission. Do not ignore the warning, as Alien Queen no.1 is the toughest monster encountered in Mission 1 and she will be accompanied by other creatures.
As for the preparations, do the following:
- Defeat the Crusher from the mine - this is a very important step, as when left undefeated, they can join the queen and make the battle extremely difficult to win, as you'll face two strong monsters.
- Prepare the marines - heal them and lower their stress levels. In case of high stress of the squad, return back to the surface. Not far from the elevator, you'll find several rooms suitable for a shelter.
- Check ammo supply and reload all weapons, including the Sentry Gun - this will save you some valuable seconds during the battle itself.
How to defeat the Alien Queen in the mine?
After opening the door, you'll learn that you are entering a lair. After approaching the queen, she will stop laying eggs, detach herself and attack your squad.
Right after the battle begins, place the Sentry Gun at the entrance to the lair. Point it towards the queen so it will start firing immediately.
In the lair itself, there is another Sentry Gun to collect. Unfortunately, it can only be picked up after the battle is over, as you need to reach the other end of the lair and loot the Gun from one of the chests.
- Use Suppressive Fire to slow down the Queen. At the same time, gradually withdraw the marines so they are out of her range.
- The Queen may use a charging attack aimed at your Squad, and if this happens, quickly move to a side i.e. in the direction of the corridor you've used to enter the lair. Also consider using U1 Grenade Launcher for a single shot that will take a lot of health from the Queen.
- During the battle, don't enter the lair itself and don't try to fight inside it. There are several eggs with facehuggers inside. When hatched, they can easily attach themselves to the marines that are busy fighting the Queen. Leave the facehuggers for after the encounter.
- The Queen has a large red health bar visible at the top of the screen and you have to deplete it fully. Once the battle is won, your progress is saved automatically. You'll also receive an objective to collect a xenosample from the defeated Queen - point to her remains and order one of the marines to interact with them.
