Politics and constitution in Tropico 6 Tropico 6 guide, tips

Last update: 25 March 2019

Tropico 6 requires you to manage interior and exterior politics. If you focus on extremes, you will be punished. This is especially relevant to your relations with superpowers. If your relations with one of the superpowers drop to zero, the game will end for you. The relations can be impacted by decisions you make during the game and by your constitution laws.

The foreign policy

During the game, you will encounter many superpowers. They change with the eras, making it impossible to create long-term alliance before you reach the modern times. The objectives of various countries will frequently conflict with each other.

The cold war is a good example of that. During this era, there are two superpowers: the Western Powers and the Eastern Bloc. The first one has capitalistic views and it will like you more if you focus on profits no matter the costs. The Eastern Bloc is based on communism and it will be happier if you will be working according to this doctrine.

These relations can be also influenced by completing missions for a country. Sometimes you will receive a task from a representative of one of them. These tasks are varied and they might require you to place specific buildings or complete given trade deal. If you decide to reject them, you will automatically worsen your relations with the superpower.

Embassy plays an important role in the foreign policy. You can invite superpowers to these buildings. It will unlock diplomatic actions related to that nation. This will enable you to praise a country, perform a delegation or create an alliance. These actions become unlocked as you reach high enough relations.

Additionally, the Embassy can modify the value of your relations with a superpower if it is surrounded by specific buildings. For example, the Axis will be satisfied if military buildings are placed nearby. Building an object near the Embassy is one of the types of tasks given by the superpowers.

You must remember to avoid political extremism. If your relations with a superpower drop to a very low value, you will receive a special task. Dismissing it will temporarily block your port. Then you will receive another special task. If you once again refuse to complete it, you will lose the game.

Domestic policy

Domestic policy is as important as foreign policy. You must keep the people happy of your regime. Otherwise winning the election might be problematic. You can always try to fake the elections or not organize them at all, but this will reduce people's trust in you. It will also increase the chance for a military coup against you.

Detailed information about social approval can be found in a separate chapter.

Elections are the most important factor. They will determine whether you will keep on playing. After information that people are demanding elections appear, you can decide to ignore it. However, in most cases it is a path of no return. It will greatly reduce public approval, frequently making it impossible to fix the loss. Because of that, you should use this option only if your situation is really bad. If your approval is at 30-40%, then you can improve it with a speech or by faking the election.

Speeches can greatly improve public approval if they are well constructed. Always praise large factions, avoid blaming superpowers and point current problems. However, avoid promising improvement of factors that you cannot improve. Promises are respected. After winning the election you will receive a task related to your promise. You will have your next cadency to complete it.

Constitution

Once you gain independence, you can write your own constitution. It features a series of laws. Their number increase with each era. Additionally, some of them must be developed through research. Constitution laws can be changed once a few years.
