In Tropico 6, the style of your rule depends on your approval rate. If the society trusts you, you'll be able to win elections. Otherwise, you'll have to forgo democracy and introduce a totalitarian rule. The chapter below is dedicated to happiness and approval levels of your society.

Approval is a more general term, and one of its constituents is happiness. Approval determines the percentage of citizens that accept you and will vote for you in the election. Based on it, you need to decide whether you want to organize an election. Aside from happiness, approval is garnered through the economic situation of the island and your election promises. If before an election, you'll promise to solve the biggest problems of the island, this factor will receive a serious raise.

Happiness is a mean of all happiness factors. You can find all of the happiness factors and your current grade in the Almanac.

  1. Food - Happiness from food mainly stems from its variety. More types of food mean a higher grade.
  2. Health care - dependent on the amount of available spots in medical buildings and their availability. The grade is also affected by their work mode and constitutional entry regarding medicine on the island.
  3. Entertainment - entertainment means the variety and the choice of entertainment for various social classes. Poorer inhabitants will use buildings from Entertainment category, while richer people will use those from Luxury Entertainment category.
  4. Faith - depends on the amount of the available spots and the quality of the buildings. In this case, the most cost-effective building is Church.
  5. Housing - every housing building offers a certain level of housing quality. If you want to keep this indicator high, you need to build new buildings with each new era. Moreover, you can electrify them.
  6. Work quality - the comfort of working in the given location. This indicator is best improved through building upgrades.
  7. Liberty - citizen freedoms. Give them access to free media and introduce Legalized Substances to improve this factor.
  8. Safety - the safety of citizens. Use the Overview tab to see where crime is high, and place a Police Station nearby. Such locations are mostly found near industrial and entertainment buildings.

If your citizens are unhappy, they will start to protest. You can act in one of a few ways - negotiate, or deal with the protesters by force. You can agree and comply with their wishes or send military to deal with the protesters. Sometimes, unhappy citizens can become rebels.
