Each class has 4 weapons. In the beginning you only have the basic one which means that you should try to get the better ones as fast as you can. To unlock them you simply have to play a lot with a selected class because weapons are unlocked by completing milestones connected to kills with a given class - kill 50 enemies in multiplayer to unlock the first weapon (Strike and Blast modes are the best for that).

New weapons are unlocked by having kills with a given class. In order to upgrade them you must kill your enemies with a weapon that you plan to upgrade in the future.

Each weapon (excluding the default one) can be slightly modified - each one of them has three modifications (better zoom, faster cooling or even night vision). However, you can only use two of them at the same time. Upgrades are unlocked in the same way - by killing a certain number of enemies with a given weapon. Because of that you should always test a weapon after you unlock it. Unlocking upgrades for a weapon that may be later useless because you got a new one is a waste of time.
