Using skills is the key aspect of the game - without them no character can deal damage. Understanding and learning to use this mechanic is as important as leveling and gathering items. In this chapter you will learn about types of skills, what expert skills are and how to use runes to improve skills.

Types of skills

All skills can be checked by pressing "K" key.

Each character in the game has access to 26 different skills. They are divided into three groups:

1. Weapon skills - these skills are related to the type of weapon used by the character. In this group there are six character skills, three per each weapon type (shield and scepter and two-handed bludgeon of the Dark Lord or a longbow and Whisperer's double wind guns). The character must have a specific weapon type to use specific skills. These are basic character skills used for attack - each attack of this type regenerates a specific number of PM ("mana").
2. Class skills - in this category there are skills that can be used with any weapon. Here there is also the greatest diversity in how the skills work - they can be used for damage dealing, supporting allies and other characters or to temporarily increase mobility.
3. Expert skills - skills related to story quests. They can be learned on levels 25, 45 and 65.

Expert skills

Expert skills must be unlocked first.

As it was mentioned, expert skills can be learned on 25, 45 and 65 level. When a character reaches the required level, you can travel to Hall of Light in the Ohrdor city and speak with the skill teacher in the center. Then simply complete a simple task by clearing one of the dungeons. Once the quest ends, you can select one expert skill.

There are six expert skills available per character. You can select up to three (once you reach the above mentioned levels). The choice should be wise - if you want to change an expert skill, you must go back to the skill teacher, select the skill you want to unlearn and pay a great number of Zen. Then you will be able to select a skill again.

Skill runes

Skill runes enable you to slightly modify character's skills

Using any skill (including expert skills) for long enough (using those enough times) will enable the character to reach mastery. In that case you can assign skill runes. Skill runes enable you to slightly modify how the skill works - the cooling time can be reduced, the damage can be increased, the critical hit chance can be increased.

Each skill can have up to three runs. The free slots and the progress in reaching the mastery can be checked on the skill screen (it can be opened with "K" key). Development of some skills, like weapon skills, takes much more time and requires more "uses".
