Oil is a type of fuel in Frostpunk 2, and depending on your choices, it can become the only fuel you can use. On this guide page we describe how to use oil and how to send it to New London during the campaign mode.
How to extract oil?
Oil is one of the types of fuel in Frostpunk 2, first encountered in the prologue (it functions there identically to coal, being the only source of fuel). In the proper campaign, you will encounter it at the end of the first chapter - you will find it in the old dreadnought, where you must establish a colony. For most of the game, the old dreadnought will be the only source of oil - to extract it, you must settle in the old dreadnought and build Extraction Districts on the deposits there.
How to transfer oil?
Once you start extracting oil in the Old Dreadnought, you'll still need to get it to New London for the city to use. For this purpose, you need to use the resource transfer option, which you will find by clicking on the colony icon in the upper right corner of the map. In the newly opened window, you can specify how many resources to send weekly from the colony to the city and vice versa.
Over time, you will have to ship more and more oil weekly to meet the demands of the growing city. Invest in frostland research and logistics district upgrades - upgrades and buildings like cable cars and cargo terminals will allow you to transfer more resources at once.
How to burn oil?
The generator in the old dreadnought runs only on oil and does not support any other fuel sources. The generator in New London initially only supports coal - so to be able to use oil you need to install an upgrade in it, which you will do at the very beginning of chapter two. You have two upgrades to choose from - one allows the generator to accept all types of fuel, i.e. coal, oil and steam (Adaptation), while the other makes the generator only burn oil but significantly increases its efficiency (Progress).
The upgrade is permanent - if you choose the Progress path, do not build the upgrade until you have secured a steady source of oil or have a large amount of it stored. Be careful, as both of your factions support a different upgrade - the opposing faction will become enraged and their fervour will increase. Installing the upgrade also costs cores, rare materials that can only be found by exploring frostlands.
