Squalor is one of the basic parameters in Frostpunk 2. It determines the general level of pollution and wear and tear in the city and its infrastructure. On this guide page, we will give you tips on how to control the negative effects of squalor, so it doesn't become a problem for your post-apocalyptic metropolis.

What is squalor?

Squalor is a factor describing pollution and the overall degradation of the city. This is a clearly negative factor which, if left to itself, can lead to a number of consequences, such as:

- increase in the frequency of diseases among residents;

- increasing tension among citizens;

- slowing down population growth;

- increase chance of failure and faster wear of districts.

When pollution appears in your city, you can check its status by hovering the cursor over the icon with crumbled rectangles on the bar at the top of the screen. In the window, you can also see all the sources contributing to the increase in pollution.

What are the sources of squalor?

The primary factor contributing to increased squalor is the lack of sufficient materials. Materials are one of the basic resources, represented by the cube icon at the top of the screen. Material shortages mean that the city's infrastructure cannot be maintained on an ongoing basis, which contributes directly to its accelerated wear and tear.

Another aspect influencing squalor are specific buildings and district configurations. Improved extraction, industrial or food districts may produce additional amounts of pollution during operation. Efficient space planning is also essential. For example, residential areas located in the immediate vicinity of the extraction district will be doomed to increased pollution, which will increase the overall squalor index of the city.

Finally, even some demands and laws introduced by the city council may affect the squalor. Let's use the Machine-Centric Shifts law as an example, the side effect of which is a slight increase in squalor.

How to reduce squalor?

There are several different ways to deal with squalor, but securing a stable materials excavation process should definitely be the first step. Look around the map and build extraction districts in areas marked with a cube icon. To increase mining efficiency or reduce the demand for materials, try to research appropriate technologies on the Idea Tree and introduce appropriate laws.

Also, don't forget to explore the Frostland. Your city's surroundings may contain abundant resources that will help you obtain the materials you need. If your main city has a problem with pollution, you can always try to move some of your production and mining to one of your colonies.

Inventions such as filtration towers and waste management facilities can help you combat pollution. Both technologies can be found on the Idea Tree in the "Resources" tab.

Finally, an emergency way to temporarily reduce squalor is to shut down districts generating pollution. If you are not currently having problems with a particular type of resource, it may be a good idea to deactivate a facility that is not currently needed. You will find the appropriate button for this in the window after clicking on a given district (the switch icon on the bottom bar).
