Ascent: Infinite Realm. A list of most-wanted upcoming MMORPGs

Table of Contents

  1. How long we've been waiting: 2 years
  2. When it's coming: 2020
  3. Distinguishing features: fighting in the air, jetpacks, airships, and quasi-steampunk

The developers of TERA Online are really taking their time with the new MMORPG. To say the development of Ascent: Infinite Realm has been problematic is to say nothing at all – the concept changes all the time, but we can be sure the game's still in the making. This is good news because there are not enough open-world games with non-target combat systems on the market. And it’s not just any open world – this one combines dragons, airships, jetpacks and magic.

The promises are bold – they include airborne boarding of ships, castle sieges, or huge air machines holding entire guilds. However, these might just as well be a pie-in-the-sky sort of promises: the other side of the coin is poor optimization, grind, and huge repetitiveness.

So it can go both ways. Ascent: Infinite Realm disappeared from the grid for some time as big changes were introduced to the project, and the latest reports sound very optimistic. What looks particularly interesting is the ability to create your own quests and modify character skills. These may not look very exciting compared to, say, the airborne combat in AIR, but at least they shouldn't let you down when everything else seems so uncertain.
