Plague Tale Requiem: Character development A Plague Tale Requiem guide, walkthrough

In Plague Tale Requiem you can develop your character. Our guide explains how to unlock new skills (Caution, Aggression, Opportunism) and how to upgrade Amicia's equipment (sling, crossbow, alchemy, gadgets).

Last update: 12 January 2023

Plague Tale: Requiem features RPG elements for Amicia's development. You can unlock new skills for the main character and upgrade her gear. In our guide, you will learn what are the requirements for character development and what are the best skills and the best upgrades.

Developing Amicia's skills

You will unlock the skill trees in chapter 2, after winning one of the fights - Plague Tale Requiem: Character development - Basics - A Plague Tale Requiem Guide, Walkthrough

You will unlock the skill trees in chapter 2, after winning one of the fights.

You can develop 3 categories of skills and each category has 4 skills to unlock:

  1. Prudence is a group of skills related to stealth.
  2. Agressive is a group of skills related to eliminating enemies.
  3. Opportunism is a group of skills related to gadgets.

Each time you collect enough XP in a given category, the game will unlock a new skill. It will remain active - you do not have to activate it manually.

You can develop skill categories by performing related activities - Plague Tale Requiem: Character development - Basics - A Plague Tale Requiem Guide, Walkthrough

You can develop skill categories by performing related activities:

  1. XP for the Prudence category is earned by sneaking through locations with enemies without killing them.
  2. XP for the Agressive category is earned by eliminating enemies - direct fights (crossbow, slingshot, melee) or stealth attacks.
  3. XP for the Opportunism category is the most problematic. You can develop this area by using gadgets. However, you have to avoid killing enemies in a direct way. Try, for example, to use Ignifer to light fires, Exstinguis to extinguish sources of light, or Odoris to distract rats.

You always get XP at the end of a sequence, such as after leaving a location where you avoided or fought enemies. You will always receive experience points only in 1 category, which was the dominant one in that part. For example, if you sneaked through the area without killing enemies then you will develop Prudence, and if you used gadgets on the environment then you will develop Opportunism. Agressive is best left for last, as it is the easiest to level up out of all 3 groups.

We have posted more tips on how to collect XP for the Opportunism category on a separate page Opportunism - how to increase? in the FAQ section.

Best skills

Light footstep - This is a Prudence upgrade that helps Amicia make less noise when sneaking. This can make it easier for you to avoid detection and surprise your opponents.

Nimbleness - This is a Prudence upgrade, which allows you to move faster when crouched. This can help you reach enemies or hiding spots.

Grappler - This is an Agressive upgrade that allows you to push opponents down during melee combat. They can be pushed into the fire or toward the rats, and in either case they can die quickly.

Alchemy knowledge - This is an Opportunism upgrade that allows you to craft new gadgets faster. You can appreciate this especially when you have to craft something during a fight.

Upgrading the heroine's gear

In Plague Tale Requiem, you can't acquire new armor and outfits (the exception is the bracer described below), but you can upgrade Amicia's gear - Plague Tale Requiem: Character development - Basics - A Plague Tale Requiem Guide, Walkthrough

In Plague Tale Requiem, you can't acquire new armor and outfits (the exception is the bracer described below), but you can upgrade Amicia's gear. By default, this is done at the workbenches found in the game world (you will find the first one in chapter 2):

  1. open workbenches are available right away;
  2. locked workbenches require spending a knife to open them, but the reward will be loot.
Each upgrade requires crafting ingredients - Plague Tale Requiem: Character development - Basics - A Plague Tale Requiem Guide, Walkthrough

Each upgrade requires crafting ingredients:

  1. Tools (one or more) - These are unique objects found quite rarely in the game. However, getting the Unbreakable Tool upgrade removes the requirement for tools.
  2. Pieces - They are a more common loot. You will find most of them in secret chests and in locked workbenches.

Note - You have to buy upgrades from the same category one at a time and each one is increasingly more expensive. The list does not initially show the crossbow - you will only unlock its upgrades once you get this weapon.

In chapter 9, you can get a Bracer, which Amicia will automatically put on as a new piece of armor - Plague Tale Requiem: Character development - Basics - A Plague Tale Requiem Guide, Walkthrough

In chapter 9, you can get a Bracer, which Amicia will automatically put on as a new piece of armor. This is not a purely cosmetic item, as it allows Amicia to recover faster from enemy attacks, so her chances of survival are increased.

Getting the bracer requires solving the windmill puzzle and gaining access to the smugglers' hideout. We described this in more detail on a separate page Optional windmill puzzle (Chapter 9) in the chapter dedicated to secrets and collectibles.

Best gear upgrades

There are several upgrades in the game that can make the gameplay much easier. They are worth unlocking as soon as possible, even if they are expensive (i.e. require 3 tools and 70-80 pieces).

Belt Cases - This is a very important upgrade from the gear category that will allow you to carry more knives and pyrite (use it to defend yourself from rats) in your inventory.

Unbreakable Tool - This is a very important upgrade that eliminates the need to find Tools for inventory upgrades. Get it as early as possible.

Bigger Quiver - This is an important upgrade for the crossbow, which will increase the limit of bolts carried. With it, you will be able to use this weapon more often.

Softened Cords - This is a slingshot upgrade that makes it more silent. This will allow you to eliminate enemies much more efficiently in locations where you want to remain hidden.

Hidden Pockets - This is an alchemical upgrade that allows you to carry more ammo with you. It is is useful mainly during larger battles.

Bottomless Bag - This is an equipment upgrade that allows you to carry more crafting components. This will reduce the risk of running out of stock of a particular component type.

Reinforced Bolts -This is a useful crossbow upgrade that allows you to retrieve bolts, but only those that hit enemies. This way, you will be able to use the crossbow more often.
