On this page of the Tunic guide, we have prepared information on the first boss in the game, The Guard Captain, and a handful of tips that will help you defeat him. The mentioned enemy can be found in the East Forest. It guards the passage to the first of the two bells required to open the Sealed Temple.
Attacks
The Guard Captain does not have many complex attacks, mainly because he is the first boss in the game - thus, he is the least demanding of all such opponents. He is a slightly larger version of Rudeling, and he even has the same skills as this opponent - he can swing his sword and hit left and right. However, the signature skill of the Guard Captain is a charge, thanks to which he jumps forward, moving towards you and dealing damage in a straight line. If you remember these two attacks, then you already know what to expect from this opponent.
How to defeat?
The Guard Captain is in one of the initial locations of the game - so you have to remember that to fight him, you need to equip the sword, which you can find in the Hero's Grave in the East Forest. More about where to find the weapon you can find on the page: The sword - how to find it?. You won't obtain the shield at this stage of the game yet, so you need to focus on staying in motion and dodging at the right moment.
Attacks of the Guard Captain are explicitly signaled. When he's about to swing his weapon left or right, he starts to glow in white. This is a sign for you to move away to a safe distance or roll back/to the side. You can see it as well when he prepares to charge. Then he hides the sword behind his back and is getting ready to thrust. Watch his attacks animations, and after a short time, you will figure out how to avoid them without any problems.
Always go on the offensive after he makes an attack because it takes a while for the Guard Captain to be ready to deal next blows. Don't overdo it with the number of counters, though - 1-2 basic attacks are the absolute maximum if you don't want to get hit. However, if you keep being patient and consistent, you will easily win the fight with the first boss.
The presence of one smaller Rudeling may be a minor hindrance in this fight. He will run alongside the boss and try to disturb you, but he is a standard opponent - so you will take him down after a few attacks. We suggest focusing mainly on him at the beginning of the fight, and then you can face the Guard Captain in a fair duel. To eliminate the minor opponent easily, and avoid getting hit by the boss, keep running around the arena and wait for the Rudeling to get ahead of the Captain. Now, you will have an opportunity to deal damage to him without the risk of being injured by the Guard Captain.
