Tunic: Hidden interactions and mechanics Tunic guide, walkthrough
On this page of the Tunic guide, you will learn about all the major hidden interactions and mechanics.
Last update: 21 April 2022
On this page of the Tunic guide, you can read about hidden interactions and mechanics that are key or useful for completing the entire game. Most of them are described on some pages of the instruction manual but in such a cryptic and non-obvious way that you might have trouble understanding the content presented there. Here you will find the descriptions in a slightly more straightforward form.
- Sprint
- Praying
- Throwing coins into the well
- Opening the door with patterns
- Opening the Mountain Door
- Finding Fairies
Sprint
In Tunic, even sprint, a very basic action, is one of the hidden mechanics. The game explains how to run faster in one of the instruction manual pages that you can find in the first hours of the game. However, if you want to sprint from the very beginning, hold down the dodge key/button while moving (space bar on PC/A on the Xbox controller). This skill is especially useful when you want to bypass a group of enemies or run away from them.
Praying
During the game, you may encounter black boxes with small lights. It turns out you can interact with them, and that way, unlock hidden passages in some locations and open locked doors. To do this, you have to approach the object and hold down the dodge key/button for about 3 seconds (space bar on PC/A on the Xbox controller). Then the character starts to pray, and the black block hides in the ground.
Praying also allows you to interact with gold panels located in various places around the game world. Step on these objects, hold down the dodge key/button for 3 seconds (space bar on PC/A on the Xbox controller), and your character will disappear and move to the Hero's Grave location. You can use it for fast travel . You can read more about this feature on the page: Fast travel - how to use? .
Throwing coins into the well
While exploring locations, you can find a consumable item in treasure chests with an initially unknown purpose - a gold coin. You can use it under the following two conditions. Firstly, you have to assign it from the inventory level to one of the three action buttons (the same ones you use for various weapons). Secondly, you have to interact with one of the wells you can find in several locations. Then, throw a coin in.
Nothing will happen when you throw one coin. However, if you find more of them during the game, get back to the selected well and continue this interaction. After throwing in 3 coins, you will receive an additional card slot as a reward (you start the game with only one such slot). You can have even more of them - you just have to use 4 and 5 coins. You don't know what cards are? Visit the page: List of items to find out.
Opening the door with patterns
In Tunic, you will find mysterious doors and other objects with drawn lines in four directions: up, down, left, and right. You can interact with them, thus unlocking access to hidden places - you only have to stick to the following steps.
Approach the object with a pattern (example in the picture), and consider it a polyline. The line starts at a specific point - in this case, use a geometric figure (in this case, a rhombus) as the starting point. This is where you start entering a special code - a code that you enter using the directional keys (arrows on the keyboard or controller).
Using the example shown in the picture, you will notice that the line starting in a rhombus, when looking at the left side of the slab, is going upwards, then breaks to the left, goes down, goes to the right, then down again, and once more to the left, then up and then goes to the right. So how do you solve this puzzle? You have to recreate the change of directions of this polyline on your keyboard/controller. In this case, the solution will be: up, left, down, right, down, left, up, right. After using this combination, you will be able to complete the task and solve the puzzle. Similar doors scattered throughout the game world can be unlocked in the same way but with different combinations.
Opening the Mountain Door
The above procedure of opening the door with patterns also has its use in the case of the large door in the Mountain Door location. Open the instruction manual on page 49 (or look at the screenshot we've posted) - you will find the first clue to solve this complex puzzle there. This time you see the beginning of a polyline and 25 squares with numbers assigned to them. What do these numbers symbolize? These are references to the instruction manual's pages collected throughout the game. On these pages, you can find more or less subtly hidden golden lines, which you need to translate to the picture on page 49 of the manual to see how the line goes.
It's strenuous work that can give you a lot of satisfaction but also cause tons of frustration. You have to find a part of the pattern on each instruction manual's page mentioned in the picture (which requires having all the necessary pages of the manual). Then, you need to recreate the whole pattern correctly using the directional keys. If you want to have complete the puzzle right away, use the code presented below (you have to be standing right in front of the door for it to work):
up, left, down, left, up, left, down, left, up, right, up, right, up, left, up, right, down, right, up, left, up, left, up, right, up, left, down, left, up, right, up, up, left, up, right, down, right, down, right, up, right, down, left, down, right, up, right, right, down, right, up, right, down, right, up, right, right, down, left, down, left, down, right, down, right, down, left, left, down, right, down, left, down, right, up, right, down, right, up, right, right, down, down, left, up, right, up, left, down, left, up, left, up, left, up, right, right, up, left, up
Opening the door will unlock an alternative ending to the game. You can read more about it on the page: Endings .
Finding Fairies
In Tunic, recreating patterns is developed even further in puzzles that begin on selected instruction manual pages. You can find there many different illustrations, and none of them is random. Many of them refer to some places in some location - one of the drawings shows, for example, a small island in the Overworld. If you go there and stand in the right place and use the directional buttons/arrow keys to recreate the appropriate combination, a fairy with a treasure will appear in this place. In Tunic, you will find as many as 20 Fairies. Finding them all is necessary if you want to complete the game in 100% .
