Phonemic cipher - what is it?

The pages of the Instruction Manual, inscriptions on plates and signs, and a number of other notes you can find in Tunic have been created using a phonemic cipher. This is a set of symbols consisting of various combinations of dots and dashes representing sounds. The mentioned sounds correspond to specific phrases and letters. Translating this kind of code is complicated, but you can do it if you like. Then you will certainly be able to understand a bit more about the plot of the game and the mythology of the world. However, before you start interpreting the cipher, it is worth knowing that:

  1. The phonemic cipher was created based on the English language. So it corresponds to English phrases and sounds. In that case, you must be familiar with the mentioned language - otherwise, you will have to translate each symbol not only into English but also into your native language.
  2. Deciphering the phonemic cipher in the game does not reveal any extra secrets. You can learn all about solving the puzzles and getting to know the mechanics available in Tunic using the pictures in the Instruction Manual and some of the text written in Latin alphabet. In addition, all the most important solutions and hints can be found in this guide. You can find the most difficult-to-learn interactions and mechanics on the page: Hidden interactions and mechanics.
