Career mode basics
- In career mode, there are a total of 39 menus (i.e. chapters) to complete. You need to go through the menus in a predetermined order. To unlock the following chapter, you need to complete the current one.
- Career chapters are a part of singleplayer mode, but as you progress, you will also unlock the separate multiplayer modes.
- During career mode, you will get several dozen cars for free, which we have listed on the List of awarded cars page. You should check out the list to avoid buying cars which you can get for free later in the game.
- Career mode can be completed on any settings. The difficulty level, assists, or vehicles you use won't affect the type of rewards you receive in career mode or how it plays out.
Prologue: Music Rally and World map
The first race of the Music Rally mode functions as the introduction to the campaign mode in GT7. You can only select the first challenge - Hooked on Classics Parts 1 and 2, where you will drive the Porsche 356 Speedster '56 on the Alsace track.
Before the race, you have to adjust the controls and it's best to stick to the default options on the left where you use the left analog stick and the L2 and R2 buttons to control the vehicle.
You will also have to choose the difficulty level, but according to the game, the selected difficulty level won't affect the rewards obtained in career mode. If you want to get through career mode quickly, or just rush through it to get rich quick, it's a good idea to play on the easy difficulty level. Of course, there are also various additional settings and control options in the game that affect how difficult it is to drive the vehicles.
All Music Rallies are time trials, in which your task is to reach subsequent control gates before time runs out. While driving, try to safely pass other cars and avoid going off track, e.g. by braking too late. Pay attention to hints such as the yellow icons displayed at the turns and the on-screen notifications about braking and recommended gears. You should also keep an eye on the map displayed on-screen, especially if you're not familiar with the Alsace track from the previous installments of GT.
There are 3 different cups to win in the trial and you need to drive 5.47 miles to get gold. Whatever the outcome, you will move on to the campaign proper. You'll also be able to return to this and other Music Raid challenges later in the game. These can be selected from the main menu displayed after booting up the game.
First, you have to choose a nickname / name for your character. It can be same as your PSN nickname, or you can opt for something different.
Next, you will proceed to the World Map. From here, you can select races and visit various locations from the campaign mode. You will gradually unlock more items on the map as you progress through the campaign and complete chapters. We've included this information in the prize lists in the following menu descriptions. The game will ask if you have played the previous GT games, and if you answer "no", additional hints will be displayed.
Go to the Used Cars section, i.e. the dealership that sells second-hand vehicles. You will learn about PP (to put it simply - the higher the value, the better/stronger the machine) and you will get to choose your first car. The available models are:
- Honda Fit Hybrid '14 for 13,000 credits.
- Toyota Aqua S '11 for 14,300 credits.
- Mazda Demio XD Touring '15 for 12,500 credits.
It doesn't really matter which car you select, although the Toyota Aqua has the highest PP score of the starting machines. Next, you should visit the Garage where your cars are stored and where you can modify their settings. You will also learn about the other uses of the garage (such as exchanging your tickets for prizes).
Prologue rewards:
- Music Rally mode - you can replay previous challenges or attempt new ones.
- Unlocking the Used Cars, Garage and Café sections on the world map.
- The starting car.
Menu 1: Collection: Japanese Compact Cars
Select the newly unlocked Café from the world map. The Café is where you can collect the next menus, i.e. unlock new campaign chapters. The premise of the first chapter is to gather all 3 Japanese compact cars, i.e. the vehicles you got to choose from for the first time in the prologue. Since you already have one of the cars, you just need to get the other 2.
Select the World Circuits option on the world map, where more tracks and races from around the world will gradually appear. Check out the circuits marked with yellow icons, during which you can unlock the free cars from the Japanese compact car collection.
In each of the races, you need to reach at least 3rd place to obtain the free car (as well as some credits). To win the vehicles, you'll need to complete short and easy races on the following tracks:
- Autodrome Lago Maggiore
- Northern Isle Speedway
- Broad Bean Raceway
Complete the two races and all 3 cars will find a new home in your garage. Optionally, you can also complete the third race required to obtain the car you selected in the prologue. This will earn you an additional copy of the car as well as collector points.
Afterwards, return to the café to watch the cut-scene about the cars and advance to the next menu.
Menu 1 rewards:
- Unlocking World Circuits, the License Center (the location where you can complete challenges and obtain licenses) and the Showcase (where you can view photos and replays of other players) on the world map.
- Free cars from the collection - Honda Fit Hybrid '14, Toyota Aqua S '11 and Mazda Demio XD Touring '15.
- Roulette Ticket - these can be found in the garage and used to enter prize roulettes.
Menu 2: Test Yourself at the License Center
The main goal of this chapter is to familiarize yourself with the License Center, which is a location where you complete various challenges and unlock connected licenses.
To complete the chapter, you only need to focus on the B-1 challenge associated with the "lowest" National B license. It requires you to start braking at the right moment in order to stop in the marked zone. You can compete for any medal, but in order to get gold, you have to complete the trial in less than 20,700 seconds. You can replay the challenge any number of times to get a better medal or simply to improve on your previous score.
We have described all the challenges in this category on the Licenses B and A page.
Once you have completed the challenge, return to the café.
Menu 2 rewards:
- Unlocking the Brands Hatch and Goodwood tracks - you will also be able to select them during free races unrelated to the menus.
Menu 3: Collection: European Classic Compacts
This challenge requires you to collect the 3 classic European compact cars. These are:
- Fiat 500 F '68
- Mini-Cooper S '65
- Volkswagen 1200 '66
All of the races you need to complete to earn these cars occur on European tracks - Autodrome Lago Maggiore, Goodwood and Brands Hatch. You don't have to buy new cars, as you can compete in all the races with the Japanese compact cars obtained during the prologue and 1st menu. Alternatively, you can immediately use the newly-obtained European classics to complete the remaining races. They are noticeably slower, however.
Menu 3 rewards:
- Unlocking the Tuning Shop on the world map.
- Unlocking the High Speed Ring track.
- Free cars from the collection - Fiat 500 F '68, Mini-Cooper S '65, Volkswagen 1200 '66.
- Roulette Ticket.
Menu 4: Championship: High Speed Ring Track Day
In this chapter of the campaign, you need to complete the first championship consisting of 2 races on the High Speed Ring track. Their recommended PP is 400 and to prepare for them, you should pay your first visit the newly unlocked Tuning Shop. There, you can buy and install parts that can increase your PP.
Select one of the better machines from your garage, i.e. one with a high initial PP score. In the tuning shop, you can buy parts from the Sports tab (you will unlock more tabs with pricier and better parts as you progress in your career). Here are some basic tips:
- Pay attention to the change in PP. Some parts will increase your PP more than others. Later in the game you will gain access to parts that will affect your car, but in turn will have no effect on PP or will even reduce it (in exchange for making some unique changes).
- It's a good idea to read the part descriptions to find out what they are for and how they can change the behavior and performance of the car.
- Don't buy all the different varieties of particular parts at once, e.g. all the sports tire types. One type will do.
The championship from this chapter of the campaign doesn't have a PP limit. Either purchase a few parts and get close to the recommended 400 PP score, or continue buying them to increase your stats even further. This way, you'll have an easier time winning races, as your tuned machine will become significantly faster than the AI cars.
Once you're done tuning, head to the World Circuits. The list of available championships is displayed at the bottom of the screen (at this point, only this chapter's challenge is available), so you don't have to choose specific tracks on the globe.
As part of the championship, you need to complete 2 races:
- High Speed Ring
- High Speed Ring Reverse
Once the championship starts, you won't be able to change your car or buy new parts for it. In each of the championship races, drivers can earn points which count towards their final classification. If you want to complete this chapter, you have to finish the championship in at least 3rd place. Try to finish both races on the podium as this should earn you enough points to meet the championship requirements.
There's a good chance of rain during the races. You don't have to worry about equipping the correct tires, as the races are short, but consider switching your camera or leaning out from behind the car you are following to make it easier to spot braking points and curves.
If you manage to win the entire championship, you will receive 15,000 credits. For the first time, you will have a chance to draw a car as a reward. Three cards are hiding different cars:
- Honda Integra Type R (DC2) '98
- Honda Civic Type R (EK) '98
- Suzuki Swift Sport '17
You can only draw one of the cars mentioned above, but fortunately you will get the other two right away in the next menu.
Menu 4 rewards:
- Unlocking the Brand Central on the world map - it's a car dealership that allows you to buy newer, unused vehicles.
- Unlocking the Tsukuba and Suzuka Circuits.
- Free random car - either Honda Integra Type R (DC2) '98, Honda Civic Type R (EK) '98 or Suzuki Swift Sport '17.
Menu 5: Collection: Japanese FF Sports Cars
This chapter is basically the same as menu 3. You need to obtain all 3 Japanese FF cars. These are:
- Honda Integra Type R (DC2) '98
- Honda Civic Type R (EK) '98
- Suzuki Swift Sport '17
You've already obtained one of these cars during the previous menu's roulette, so you just have to fight for the other two (or you can try to get all three if you want another copy of the previously unlocked car).
The races are held on the Tsukuba Circuit, Suzuka Circuit and High Speed Ring tracks. The recommended PP score is 450 and the additional requirements are: FF (front drive) and origin: Japan. It's a good idea to simply tune the car you won in the previous championship (like the Suzuki Swift Sport pictured above) or one of the small compact cars from the first menu. Make sure to upgrade your car to at least 450PP, because the new races lack an upper PP limit. You need to finish the races in the top 3.
Menu 5 rewards:
- Free cars from the collection - Honda Integra Type R (DC2) '98, Honda Civic Type R (EK) '98, Suzuki Swift Sport '17.
- Roulette Ticket.
Menu 6: Tune a Classic Car
Visit the garage and choose the Mini-Cooper S '65 that you received for completing menu 3. Next, head over to the tuning shop. To complete this short chapter, you need to upgrade your vehicle to at least 360PP. You can buy parts from the first two tabs - Sports and Club Sports.
When making purchases, remember that some parts from the higher categories are direct upgrades of parts from the previous tabs (e.g. suspension). For this reason, while purchasing parts, it's best to start from the highest tabs. You can choose any parts, but make sure to keep an eye on how they affect your PP score. All that matters is to reach 360PP.
Menu 6 rewards:
- Unlocking Alsace and Sardegna - Road Track.
Menu 7: Collection: European Hot Hatches
In this chapter, you will have to participate in 3 races during which you will complete the European Hot Hatches. These are:
- Mini Cooper S '05
- Abarth 500 '09
- Volkswagen Polo GTI '14
The races take place on the following tracks: Alsace, Brands Hatch and Sardegna - Road Track. 400PP is recommended. If you want to use the Mini you've upgraded in the previous chapter, try to have it reach at least 400PP. You can also use other vehicles instead or even start using the new cars obtained in subsequent races. As always, all you need to do is finish the races in the top three to receive the free vehicles.
Menu 7 rewards:
- Unlocking Scapes (taking photos against different landscapes) and GT Auto (vehicle repairs, visual modifications and paint jobs) on the world map.
- Free cars from the collection - Mini Cooper S '05, Abarth 500 '09, Volkswagen Polo GTI '14.
Menu 8: Wash a Car at GT Auto
You need to visit the new GT Auto menu by selecting it from the world map. The GT Auto has various uses, but to complete the chapter, select the first item - Maintenance & Servicing. Paying for the Car Wash is the first item on the list and only costs 50 credits.
Menu 8 rewards:
- Unlocks Tokyo Expressway track.
Menu 9: Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade
Chapter 9 of the campaign has an important limitation - you can't enter the championship without a National B license. Consequently, you have to complete all the B license challenges - from B-1 to B-10. All you need to do is earn bronze in these challenges, but if you manage to get gold, you will be rewarded with a bonus car.
We have described all of the National B license challenges on the Licenses B and A page.
As a reminder, in order to start the championship, head to World Circuits and select the correct ones from the bottom of the screen (without manual track finding). The championship requires completing 2 races:
- Tokyo Expressway - Central Clockwise
- Tokyo Expressway - Central Counterclockwise
The good news is that the championship has no other vehicle requirements apart from obtaining the B license. The recommended PP is 450 and you can use any vehicle from your garage that meets these requirements (or tune one of the weaker machines you have).
Rain might occur during one of the races, but since they're short, you don't have to worry about switching tires. The prize for 1st place in the championship is 20,000 credits. Just like in menu 4, you need to finish the championship in at least 3rd place (the points from both races are summed up) and you will get a chance to unlock a random car from the following pool:
- Nissan Silvia Q's (S13) '88
- Mazda Eunos Roadster (NA) '89
- Toyota Corolla Levin 1600GT APEX (AE86) '83
You'll get the chance to win the cars you didn't get in the roulette in the following chapter.
Menu 9 rewards:
- Unlocking multiplayer and the Sport mode - you can choose them from the world map.
- Free random car - Nissan Silvia Q's (S13) '88, Mazda Eunos Roadster (NA) '89 or Toyota Corolla Levin 1600GT APEX (AE86) '83.
- Roulette Ticket.
Menu 10: Collection: Japanese FR Sports Cars
In this chapter, your task is to collect 3 Japanese FR cars. These are:
- Nissan Silvia Q's (S13) '88
- Mazda Eunos Roadster (NA) '89
- Toyota Corolla Levin 1600GT APEX (AE86) '83
You've already obtained one of these cars during the previous menu's roulette, so you just have to fight for the other two (or you can try to get all three if you want another copy of the previously unlocked car).
The races are held on the Tsukuba Circuit, High Speed Ring and Tokyo Expressway. The recommended PP score is 450 and the additional requirements are: FR (rear drive) and origin: Japan. The easiest way is to use the car you drew in the previous menu. Of course, you also have the option to tune them (up to 450PP or even more) to increase your odds. You'll get the cars for free if you reach the top 3 in their corresponding races.
Menu 10 rewards:
- Free cars from the collection - Nissan Silvia Q's (S13) '88, Mazda Eunos Roadster (NA) '89, Toyota Corolla Levin 1600GT APEX (AE86) '83.
- Unlocking the Deep Forest Raceway track.
