Might and Magic Video Game Series

A series of cRPG games in fantasy realities. The series was created by the New World Computing studio. Currently, the rights to the brand are held by Ubisoft, and such studios as Limbic Entertainment, Capybara Games and Black Hole Entertainment are involved in its development.

The creator of the Might Magic series is Jon Van Caneghem, founder of the New World Computing studio, for whom the game Might and Magic: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum, released in 1986, was both a development and publishing debut. Over the course of sixteen years (1986-2002), the series lived to see nine installments classified as mainstream, as well as a number of spin-offs such as Crusaders of Might and Magic, Warriors of Might and Magic, Legends of Might and Magic, and the Heroes of Might & Magic sub-cycle. After the bankruptcy of 3DO, which owned the New World Computing studio, the rights to the brand were acquired by Ubisoft. Over the following years, this resulted in the games Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, Heroes of Might & Magic V, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, and Might & Magic: Heroes VI, among others. The publisher also plans to return to the mainstream with Might & Magic: X Legacy, a game being developed by Limbic Entertainment studio.

An online card game taking place in the Might & Magic universe, a popular fantasy universe known from cult-classic franchise of cRPGs and turn-based games. The game from Ubisoft Montreal focuses on player on player duels using pre-made card decks containing various types of military units and battle spells. Each army is led by a hero whose abilities determine what kind of units and spells to use. The battles take place on a 4x4 board that is used to throw the cards, while our objective is to deprive our opponent of all his health points. Each won duel is rewarded with experience points and virtual currency that can be used to add new cards to our deck. The game introduces cross-platform play for PC and mobile users as well as rich selection of social media interactions.

An official expansion for Might and Magic: Duel of Champions by Ubisoft, released for consoles as a standalone production combining the DLC and the base game. Forgotten Wars is once again set in the fantasy universe; you create a hero, assemble your deck and participate in epic duels, in which you have to bring down the opponent's health to zero. You do it with your cards depicting heroes, events, monsters, spells, special buildings and strokes of luck. The gameplay is turn-based and focused mostly on ranked duels and tournaments. The expansion adds four new card packs, each consisting of 120 cards: Void Rising, Herald of the Void, Forgotten Wars, and Five Towers — 650 cards to collect in total.

January 23, 2014

Might & Magic X: Legacy is the tenth installment in the legendary cRPG series, and the first one created by Limbic Entertainment. The game is set in the fantasy world of Ashan, after the events of Might & Magic: Heroes VI. The City of Karthal, located on the Agyn Peninsula, is on the brink of seceding from the Holy Empire. Four adventurers, controlled by the player, become involved in a conspiracy, which can affect the fate of the whole kingdom. Mechanics-wise, Might & Magic X: Legacy is based on the earliest installments of the series and features e.g. turn-based combat, a wide range of weapons and equipment, and expansive skill developing options.

A spin-off of the popular Might & Magic series by Capybara Games, originally released for Nintendo DS, and later also for PC and the eight generation consoles. It is a combination of logic puzzle games and turn-based strategies with significant plot, and visuals-wise it resembles a jRPG. The story was divided into 5 episodes, during which you have to complete quests, explore the world, talk to NPCs, and, of course, fight enemies. The game focuses strongly on creating and managing your team, consisting of e.g. knights, elves, wizards, necromancers, or tamed demons. It allows you to use various strategies and your troops' special abilities in battle. The single player mode is complemented by an online and a local multiplayer mode, in which your team competes against other players' teams.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic

RPG

October 24, 2006

Another attempt at a first-person action game set in the popular Might & Magic franchise. Dark Messiah of Might & Magic was created by then-unknown development team at Arcane Studios (who later became famous thanks to the Dishonored series) for Ubisoft, who bought the rights to the IP from its previous publisher, 3DO. In Dark Messiah of Might & Magic you assume the role of Sareth, a young apprentice to the wizard Phenrig, whose mission is to prevent the coming of the eponymous Dark Messiah into the realm of Ashan. As you are exploring 12 vast locations and follow the main questline, you will fight various enemies, such as orcs, goblins, trolls, and even dragons. The authors put much emphasis on creating realistic swordplay and offered players about 40 weapons as well as several dozen offensive spells. Moreover, gameplay has been enriched with RPG elements, meaning that the protagonist gains experience and learns new abilities and spells over time. Apart from the story-based single player campaign, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic offers multiplayer for up to 20 players.

Might and Magic Kroniki: Antologia

RPG

September 22, 2006

A package of six games belonging to the extremely popular fantasy series by New World Computing studio. Despite the name, however, we are not dealing with a complete anthology of the series - the set entitled Might and Magic Chronicles: Anthology included only productions released on PC between 1998 and 2002. Among them we can find four main installments of the series, namely Might and Magic VI: Mandate of Heaven, Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor, Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer and Might and Magic IX: Writ of Fate.

Shifters

Action

June 17, 2002

A direct sequel to the PlayStation 2 TPP action game Warriors of Might and magic. In this spin-off of the popular fantasy game series, Alleron the warrior, known from the previous game, faces organic and metal invaders, who transformed peaceful villages into soulless cities of steam. There are six levels waiting for the protagonist, in which he has to fight opponents of various races and boss enemies. Alleron can shift into 24 forms, which represent class and professions known from role-playing games. As the game progresses, you earn more powerful weapons and spells, while the gathered experience helps with developing your character.

Might and Magic IX: Writ of Fate

RPG

March 29, 2002

The ninth installment in the cult RPG series by New World Computing. The action of Might and Magic IX: Writ of Fate is set in a new region of the world known from Heroes of Might & Magic IV. The new adventure starts when our ship crashes on a mysterious island, and our first task is to find our missing crewmates and a way to escape. Then, we have to help six local tribes unite against a common enemy from the west, led by an evil warlord called Tamur Leng. In the game, we lead a party of four daredevils of various races and classes. We can also recruit three additional NPCs who'll grant us extra skills. The biggest strength of this installment is a new engine, LithTech 2.5, thanks to which the action takes place in nine huge locations, while the graphics present the best quality level in the history of the franchise thus far.

Might and Magic IX: Writ of Fate

Legends of Might and Magic

Action

June 29, 2001

An interesting attempt to create an online team based action game taking place in the Might and Magic universe. In comparison to other installments created in the same fashion (Crusaders and Warriors of Might and Magic) Legends of Might and Magic is a multiplayer-oriented game, inspired by popular online action games such as Counter Strike or Unreal Tournament. We are left with 25 maps that recreate some of the locations known to the fans of the series, as well as 50 different AI-controlled opponents. The players choose one of two factions (good and evil) and pick up one class from six available ones, three for each faction. The game contains four gameplay modes: Sword in the Stone, Save the Princess, Warlord Escape, and Slay the Dragon. The modes, despite their original names, are similar to what we can encounter in most multiplayer-oriented games, with an interesting (for that time) addition of RPG elements – the player can amass experience, allowing them to improve their attributes, acquire new abilities, or learn new spells.

Legends of Might and Magic

Warriors of Might and Magic

Action

March 20, 2001

Warriors of Might and Magic is the first console game in the popular RPG series. Due to the platform's character, instead of being your typical RPG game, Warriors of Might and Magic is a third person action-adventure game. We play as Allenor, a young warrior who has been accused of practicing the forbidden art of necromancy. The accusation lead to him being captured and imprisonment. For his punishment, he has to wear the Mask of the Accused, a living mask that brings him unending anguish. Our hero decides to cleans his name and find out why he was accused of such crimes. In terms of gameplay, Warriors of Might and Magic is a typical hack and slash game with RPG elements. We will explore ten vast levels where we will have to face numerous enemies. The games has a rather simple combat and spell system. In time, our hero gains more experience and levels, which allows us to level up his skills and use more powerful equipment.

Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer

RPG

March 1, 2000

Another installment of the universally acclaimed RPG series. Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer takes us to a completely different realm of Jadame where the legendary Escaton The Destroyer, who wandered through different worlds for centuries, appears. After the opening of the gates of fire, air, water, and earth, the powers that used to lie dormant begins to ravage the land. To defeat the spreading evil, the player-led party of warriors has to earn the trust of many powerful allies. As far as graphics and gameplay mechanics are concerned, the game is almost identical to its predecessor. However, the way we lead the party was completely changed. This time around, we create just one hero, while the rest can be freely recruited and swapped. Apart from that, the game features previously unavailable spells and skills, a modified character development system, and an enhanced user interface.

Crusaders of Might and Magic

Action

December 10, 1999

Crusaders of Might and Magic, developed by 3DO Company, is an action RPG spin-off of the popular Might and Magic series. We play as a young warrior named Drake who seeks revenge for the slaughter that took place in his home village in the past. After years spent on training and exercising, he decides to face the force that ravages the country - Legion of the Fallen, led by the demonic Necros who sold his soul for magical powers. During our adventures we explore new locations and fight with the encountered enemies. We have various weapons at our disposal and thirty powerful spells. Like in most RPGs, our character levels up and improves their skills. The game features full-3D visuals.

Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor

RPG

June 9, 1999

The seventh installment in one of the most popular first-person RPGs by New World Computing. Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor takes us to the world of Erathia, which slowly regains its balance. It quickly turns out that multiple different races cannot coexist peacefully, and the increasing tensions between humans and elves will soon become intolerable. The Necromancer guild tries to use the situation in Erathia to their wicked ends, and only the player-controlled party can thwart their plan. Apart from the main storyline, the game features 18 side quests, nearly 30 kinds of monsters, and over 500 non-player characters. The seventh installment of the saga, created on the basis of its predecessor, offers a similar visual quality level as well as comparable gameplay mechanics and character development system. The number of available classes was increased, though, and the plot became multi-threaded, thus forcing the player to make choices that have an impact on the further course of the story.

Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor

Might and Magic VI: Mandate of Heaven

RPG

April 15, 1998

The sixth major installment of the cult RPG series. Might and Magic VI: Mandate of Heaven tells a completely new story that fills the plot hole between the second and third installment of the Heroes of Might and Magic series. The action takes us to the fantastical land of Enroth which was plunged into chaos after king Roland Ironfist had disappeared and the apocalypse worshippers decided to overthrow prince Nicolai to put their leader on the throne. The eponymous Mandate of Heaven can only be reclaimed by the player-controlled party of four heroes — this time, they are all human and represent character classes typical of the universe. The novelty in the series is the possibility of choosing between turn-based and real-time combat mode. In technical terms, the production is a great step forward in history of the series since it features seasons, a day-and-night cycle, and fully three-dimensional graphics that let us rotate the view by 360 degrees as well as look up and down.

Might and Magic VI: Mandate of Heaven

Might and Magic: World of Xeen

RPG

January 1, 1994

A special installment in the bestselling RPG series, Might and Magic, which combines the fourth and the fifth one together. The action of Might and Magic: World of Xeen takes place in an open world divided into two parts, reigned by a man named Alander. The villain has imprisoned prince Roland and queen Kalindra and bribed the local monsters, after which he sent his general, known as Lord Xeen, to the light side of the planet who then kidnapped its governor and took over the sky castle. After the defeat of the demonic ruler, it turns out that the said Alamar is the Guardian Sheltem himself whom we have pursued from the very beginning of the saga. The most important bonus of the compilation are the additional quests and locations that are unavailable in either game separately. Releasing both titles on a single CD allowed the developers to enrich their content with high-quality digitalized dialogues.

Might and Magic: World of Xeen

Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen

RPG

January 1, 1993

The fifth installment in the famous RPG franchise from New World Computing and a direct sequel to the fourth installment, which was released a year earlier. Plot-wise, Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen is the final chapter in the story of two vicious enemies: Sheltem and Corak. Having defeated the demonic Lord Xeen, the player's party follows prince Roland on the dark side of the planet, the place where the final battle of the guardians is to take place. When it comes to gameplay mechanics, the fifth installment doesn't introduce any novelties, relying instead on proven solutions of its predecessors. Due to the plot continuity with the fourth part, the game offers the option to import the characters used by the player in Might and Magic IV. As a homage to the fans of the series, both titles can be combined into a single game, enabling the player to explore lands and quests unavailable in each of the games separately.

Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen

Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen

RPG

January 1, 1992

The fourth installment of the popular first-person RPG series launched in 1986 by New World Computing. In Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen, the party that pursues Sheltem gets to a land oppressed by the mysterious Lord Xeen who imprisoned Xeen’s governor, Crodo, and wreaks havoc in the world that plunged into chaos. To defeat the demonic ruler, one must forge a special sword — and the player-controlled party naturally takes on this task. The fourth installment of the series is powered by the same graphics engine and features nearly identical gameplay mechanics as its predecessor. The most notable novelties include the useful note system and the possibility of choosing one of two difficulty levels, Adventurer or Warrior, which influence the durability of our foes. The user interface received a special compartment for story items, which prevents us from accidentally selling them.

Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen

Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra

RPG

July 29, 1991

The third installment of the popular RPG series created by Jon Van Canghem and his studio, New World Computing. In Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra, the vile Sheltem, whom we pursued in two previous games, finally gets to the world of Terra where he initially reigned. The tireless Corak follows him and meets a completely new party of adventurers that hail from Sheltem’s homeland. The general gameplay premise remains the same, although the production offers a significantly revamped interface, mouse support, and the possibility of saving the game at any moment. The biggest novelty is the fact that we lead a party of premade adventurers in contrast to the title’s predecessors. The game features colorful and detailed VGA graphics that beat the previous installments of the series in terms of appearance as well as high-quality music, sound effects, and digitalized voice acting.

Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra

Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World

RPG

December 1, 1988

A sequel to the well-received RPG by New World Computing, considered one of the milestones in the genre’s development. The action of Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World takes place directly after the events of its predecessor. When it turns out that the vile Shaltem escaped to the world of Cron thanks to a mysterious portal, a party of heroes has to follow him and stop him once more. They will be helped by his greatest enemy — Corak, whom we know from the original Might & Magic. The action is presented from the first-person perspective and takes place both in an open world as well as in cities and narrow dungeons. Yet again, we control a party of six adventurers—although this time we have two additional slots for party members and can also import heroes from the original game. The production is enriched with two new professions, innovative class-specific quests, new skills and spells as well as enhanced graphics.

Might and Magic Book One: Secret of the Inner Sanctum

RPG

October 15, 1986

A first-person RPG that combines elements of fantasy and science fiction developed by New World Computing. The plot of Might and Magic Book One revolves around solving the mystery of a holy site called the Inner Sanctum. The action is set in the land of VARN which we traverse with a party of six heroes that complete various quests and fight all sorts of monsters. In our journey, we meet a man name Corak and take part in his crusade against Sheltem, a villain who impersonates a king. Party members can belong to one of six classes and five races, while the character development system brings the solutions of Dungeons & Dragons to mind. Combat is turn-based which allows us to calmly plan our strategy for every battle. Compared to the competition, the game offers a vast, open world, while the graphics catch the eye with a larger amount of colors and details.

Might & Magic: Raiders

RPG

cancelled

A planned but ultimately canceled role-playing action game utilizing a free-to-play model, set in the universe of the popular Might and Magic fantasy game series. The game takes place just before the Bloodmoon Eclipse from Might and Magic: Heroes VI. The demon invasion of Hammerfall brings an intervention from the Holy Falcon Empire, whose ruler wants to use it as a chance to instigate a rebellion and possess the arcane knowledge and abilities of the Hammerfall smiths. In Might & Magic: Raiders you play as the Riders of Ashan, who set out to help the invaded city and fight the demons. The game focuses on the co-op form of gameplay, in which teams of four players each battle demons and powerful boss enemies in quick raids (up to 20 minutes). You can choose one of the four character classes with unique abilities and customize your character quite freely.

Might & Magic: Raiders

Might & Magic Showdown

Strategy

cancelled

Might & Magic Showdown is a miniature wargame set in the Might & Magic universe. It was developed by Fun House, a part of the Ubisoft Montreal studio. Even though the game offers a single player campaign, it was implemented solely for training purposes. Quick, multiplayer PvP duels, set on boards stylized after the actual miniature wargmes, are the key element of the game. Players control a hero who has an array of special abilities at their disposal, which have their own cooldowns, and up to three monsters from the pool of available creatures. You cannot control those monster directly, you can only define their tactics for the battle. The more duels you win, the more heroes and creates will be available to you. One of the game's main assets is the possibility to personalize the figurines. You can paint even their smallest details, or use premade skins. Even though the game has all the characteristic elements known from the other Might & Magic games, its gameplay is visibly different than in the main installments of the series.
