Shifters for PS2 is a direct sequel to the 2001 dynamic TPP game – Warrior of Might and Magic, by 3D0 Company, introducing the popular RPG universe to console players. It is the fourth attempt at selling action games fans on the Might and Magic brand, since they usually did not pay much attention to the world created by Jon Van Caneghem.
Plot
Shifters continues the story of Alleron, known from the previous game. Cleared of charges and no longer wearing the mask of shame, he gained an extraordinary ability to shift into 24 forms representing classes and professions known from role-playing games. Alleron uses his powers to fight organic and metal invades, who transformed peaceful villages into soulless cities of steam. The protagonist has to get through six levels and fight opponents of distinct races and final boss enemies. As the game progresses, you gain more powerful weapons and spells, and the experience you gather is used to develop your character, just like in other role-playing games.
Mechanics
Compared to Warriors of Might and Magic, the mechanics remained almost the same and, despite the large potential, the repeats its predecessor's errors. The irritating camera work, poor combat system, weak enemy AI and other annoying bugs resulted in poor commercial performance, despite the improved visuals and sound. Shifters was one of the last productions by 3DO Company before the studio went bankrupt in 2003. One of the factors of that was the commercial failure of other Might and Magic games after the purchase of New World Computing.
