Utility items are those that (in most cases) cannot be crafted by the player and which are crucial to the game. In most cases you will be able to find a single copy of a given item on the whole island.

Flashlight

Flashlight (previously known in the game as Plastic Torch), can be used to illuminate the terrain in front of you - just as you can use a flare or a lighter. The torch emits the strongest and the brightest light of all the items in the game, but it requires batteries to function - each battery allows you to use your flashlight for a maximum of 10 minutes. You can find it in the caves, or pick it up from a suitcase.

Batteries

Batteries are used as a source of power for the Flashlight - each one of those allows the item to function for about 10 minutes. Batteries can be found inside caves.

Lighter

Lighter provides the player with light, it also allows to, above all else, light up dynamite.

A lighter is the standard (available to you from the very beginning of the game) and the only unlimited source of light in the game - unfortunately, it has the weakest illumination value of all the light sources. It's also used to light fires and effigies, as well as dynamites and Molotov cocktails.

Cassette Player

Cassette Player allows the player to listen to music and replenish energy at the same time.

The Cassette Player is used to regenerate one's energy - after activating it from your inventory screen, your character will use it, and a climatic music will be heard for a few minutes, and energy will be regenerated a lot faster. This item can be activated unlimited amount of times (according to 1.0 version of the game), which is why it's one of the most valuable possessions in the game. The Cassette Player can only be found on the boat's deck.

Note that using the item will attract unnecessary attention and lure nearby cannibals (as well as mutants) - you should not overuse it.

Flares

Flares are, obviously, used to illuminate your surroundings - after picking them up from your inventory, they will emit a strong, red light. You can throw them, to light up the terrain around them, which will also allow you to have your hands free (which is especially useful when you stumble upon an enemy patrol during the night, and you lack a flashlight at your disposal). Flares cannot be loaded into your Flaregun - you need to turn them into ammo by combining Flare Gun with Flares (it gives 1 ammo per Flare). You can find them on the deck of the boat, as well as in the caves.

Flare Gun, of the most effective methods of "persuasion".

The Flare Gun, unlike regular flares, is not used to illuminate your surroundings, because it emits a rather weak light. It is, however, extremely effective against cannibals - a single flare is capable of setting an enemy on fire, dealing heavy damage (but not killing the target), allowing the player to either flee the area or to finish off the enemy in melee range. After one of the updates to the game (version 0.65), the Flare Gun requires time to reload in-between shots.

Axe

There are few variations of axes in the game, such as: Plane Axe, which you start with (you will pick it up before you leave the plane), Stone Axe, which you can craft on your own (by combining a stone and a stick), Modern Axe, which can be found in one of the mutant's camps, and a Rusty Axe, which can be collected at one of the cave's entrances (just before the wooden barricade). There are two additional types of those items in the game. Climbing Axe (allowing the player to climb walls - like the protagonist of the newest installments of the Tomb Raider franchise), as well as Machete - the latter is technically not an axe, but it can be used to chop down trees. Each axe differs from others in terms of attack speed and damage - some are better suited against faster cannibals, others will be more effective against mutants. All of the items from this group (except the Climbing Axe) allows the player to cut down trees.

Spear

Spear is useful when fishing.

There are two types of spears in the game - a Weak Spear and an Upgraded Spear. Both of those weapons are used for melee combat, but thanks to their length, they allow the player to keep enemies at a safe distance. They are exceptionally effective when dealing with lone cannibals - proper usage of those weapons will allow a skilled player to avoid any damage. This is also the best item to use when fishing. Spear can be found, as well as crafted - it can then be upgraded to create the Upgraded Spear.

Molotov Cocktail

Molotov cocktails are probably known to all players.

Molotovs are probably the best weapon against mutants in the game - a single, properly aimed "bomb in a bottle" can set ablaze several enemies at once, to kill them in agony in a few next seconds. The materials needed to craft a Molotov (Booze and Cloth) are easy to find, which is why you should have an abundant supply of those bombs at your disposal, at all times. Additionally, Molotov can be used as a light source (for instance, inside a cave), illuminating the area better than a lighter - you only need to have it equipped in your hand.

Note - you must light (with the help of a Lighter) the bottle before you throw it. Otherwise it will not cause any damage!

Bomb

Bombs look ridiculous, but they are terrifyingly powerful weapons.

Bombs, similarly to Molotov cocktails, are used to fight enemies. However, instead of setting enemies on fire, bombs tear apart everything within their reach. Materials used to craft those are rare, which is why you should always think twice before throwing one - maybe the enemy (or a group of them) can be killed by other means.

Head Bomb

The upgraded version of the Bomb, created by combining a regular Bomb and a cannibal Head. The player is able to carry a single Head Bomb at a time, but it deals the highest damage in the game - only the strongest mutants (blue variants) will survive the explosion.

Tennis Ball

A tennis ball is used only as a mean of distraction - ball thrown in the close vicinity of an enemy will force him to check the source of ruckus, and a direct hit will set the enemy on alarm, and he will start searching you. You can find them inside of suitcases, as well as near the corpses of tennis players inside one of the mutant camps.

Dynamite

Dynamite is a powerful weapon, but hard to use against enemies.

Dynamite is another type of explosive available in the game. It can be mostly found in caves, sometimes in cannibal villages. Dynamites, like Molotov Cocktails, must first be set on fire with the Lighter.

Rebreather

Rebreather is, basically, an oxygen tank allowing the player to breathe underwater. It can be found inside cave 5, in the flooded section. It allows the player to breathe 5 minutes before it is necessary to change to another Air Canister.

Air Canister

Air Canisters are used to supply the Rebreather with oxygen. Each one of them provides the player with 5 minutes of breathing underwater. They can be found on the yacht, as well as in some caves.
