Farming Simulator 19: Machines for grass, hay Farming Simulator 19 Guide and Tips
Last update: 04 May 2020
Grass and hay are used mainly for getting silage that can be sold or used in animal husbandry. Collect grass from your field or other parts of your parcel. Hay is a mowed grass that was run over with tedders.
- The process of collecting granular materials with a baler is described in a separate chapter.
Mowers
The shop has 4 different mowers that can be attached to a tractor.
- New Holland Discbine 313 - avoid this mower: it is very impractical because it has wheels (it doesn't get lifted upwards when the mower is deployed). This hinders its mobility and overall efficiency.
- KUHN GMD 4411 - you can attach one mower to the front and one to the back of your tractor. They are deployed sideways - you can mow two rows of grass with a small cost and without overloading your vehicle (however, you won't cut grass in the middle row). This mower is a cheap alternative for Pottinger models.
- Pottinger Novacat 301 ED and X8 ED - these mowers are the best possible configuration (it even works better than a self-propelled mower). Attach 310 ED to the front of your tractor, X8 ED should be in the back - this configuration will allow you to mow rows that are 11.5 meters wide.
Self-propelled mower
Krone BiG M 450 is for more demanding player. Sadly, this vehicle isn't as good as Pottinger Novacat mowers (which must be attached to a tractor). BiG M 450's wideness is smaller by 1.5m when compared to the models described above, and it costs a fortune.
- Don't let the 40km/h speed deceive you - the vehicle needs a lot of time to increase its speed while mowing. It won't go faster than 22km/h - this speed is the same as that of Pottinger mowers.
Tedders
Use tedders to get hay. Cut grass, drive over it with tedders, and collect hay.
- These machines have low requirements - they are fast and they don't need a tractor with a powerful engine.
- Watch out when you are collecting hay: if, i.e. your loading wagon starts collecting grass (which wasn't affected with tedders), the content of that wagon's container can turn into grass or it will stop collecting hay.
Windrowers
The better you do at windrowing, the less work you will have to do later. The major difference between the various windrower models is their width - this determines how many rows you will have to collect later. The bigger model you get, the less windrows you will have to collect (the amount of grass is the same). Windrowers can be used for: grass, hay or straw.
Remember - you can store hay in a hay loft (Placeables category).
Loading Wagons
Loading wagons are for collecting grass, hay, straw and silage lying on the ground. This is an alternative for creating bales. Loading wagons are rather expensive, slow and have a moderate capacity. They also need a rather powerful tractor to be used efficiently. Cheaper models are good at the beginning of the game. More expensive models are for more demanding and richer players.
- Important: loading wagons can be loaded from above. You can use them to transport silage but they can't collect it from a silo.
