ESO: Classes - introduction, tips ESO guide, tips

Last update: 03 August 2021

This chapter of The Elder Scrolls Online guide has detailed descriptions of all basic classes - Dragonknight, Nightblade, Sorcerer, and Templar.

By reading this information, you will learn their specializations, available playstyles, unique abilities and ways of using them in combat. We have also prepared a few recommended builds. Thanks to them you can plan whether you want your character to be a tank (focuses enemies' attention), DPS (deals the most damage) or healer (heal yourself and others).

The description of the available abilities will help you learn about your character and about the style to which it is fit. Also, you can find here hints on combat, while using these particular abilities. This guide lists, also, the recommended items that your class will rely on and which are the most optimal for it. The list of the recommended items also includes the spells and abilities, optimal for your class, which max out on the statistics on which they rely.

The Elder Scrolls Online is an MMO that has been released by Bethesda and Zenimax Online. In the game, you will both find the aspects of a solo play, as well as being a part of one small, or big party. The references that make their way into the game will surely satisfy all of the fans of the elder Scrolls series. This guide has been drawn up with the available classes in mind. What you can find here is mainly descriptions and hints on how to play as these classes, as well as how to determine your playing style, and take advantage of that. There are two developments paths, available for each class, which are different in what roles they play in a party.

The Elder Scrolls Online Guide- character classes includes:

  1. Detailed descriptions of characters
  2. Hints on combat as the individual classes
  3. Two different builds for each class
  4. Hints on the items in which a given class relies

Important note: The following pages contain descriptions of the 4 classes available in ESO from the very beginning - Dragonknight, Nightblade, Sorcerer and Templar. The current version of the game also has a Warden class which was added with Morrowind expansion. The description of the Warden class along with recommended playstyles and builds can be found in The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind DLC chapter.

Class - when can I choose?

You need to choose your class when making a new character - ESO: Classes - introduction, tips - Classes - The Elder Scrolls Online Guide

You need to choose your class when making a new character. Select it on the first tab, Character, in the creator.

At the time of making this guide, 5 out of the 6 classes were available to all players. The only class that must be unlocked is the Necromancer. You can get it by either purchasing Elsweyr expansion or unlocking it with ESO Plus subscription.

Can I change the class?

No, TESO doesn't have any options for changing the class you chose while making a character. If you want to play as a different class, the only solution is to create a new character.

Character progression - how to develop a hero?

Character development in The Elder Scrolls Online offers players a lot of freedom - ESO: Classes - introduction, tips - Classes - The Elder Scrolls Online Guide

Character development in The Elder Scrolls Online offers players a lot of freedom. There are no artificial limitations - you can develop your character in many different ways, even when some of them aren't as good as the recommended builds.

There are three ways of developing a character:

  1. By spending attribute points on increasing health, magic, or stamina. The more points you spend on a given attribute, the bigger the impact it will have on the character (e.g. more health points or mana points for casting spells).
  2. By unlocking and using active skills. Remember that you can only use and develop those active skills that are placed on the action bar. Since the bar has limited capacity, choose those skills that are the best for you or for a given situation.
  3. By unlocking passive skills. Unlike active abilities, passive skills have no restrictions. You can unlock and upgrade them however you want - their passive stat bonuses always work.

If you want to learn more about using abilities and getting skill points, check out Skill points - how to obtain them? and Classes and abilities pages.
