15. The Last Guardian. The ultimate best PS4 exclusives

Table of Contents

What's that about? A little boy befriends a mysterious creature and together they try to get out of a mysterious land.

Games are art. Over the course of several decades of electronic entertainment, we have received hundreds (if not thousands) of titles that clearly prove this. And yet many people, including those who regularly play, still have trouble accepting that a product composed of the script, music, and video could be called something more than a pleasant timesink. These people in particular should become acquainted with The Last Guardian.

The third after the iconic Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, the proprietary work of Fumito Ueda took a long time and effort to create – initially it was supposed to be released on the PlayStation 3, but the console could not cope with the vision of the creators. As a result, the title was released only on PS4, where it was also able to strain the hardware at times – FPS drops or the camera not coping with the situation were quite often phenomena.

However, we forgive The Last Guardian for these problems, because it is a unique production. The story focuses on a boy who finds himself in a mysterious, hostile land. Fleeing from the pursuers, the young man meets Trico - a huge animal resembling a hybrid of a dog and an eagle. From now on, in order to be able to leave this sinister place, the two begin working together, trusting each other, and forming a strong bond.

Although Trico is a creature born of the imagination, the meticulousness of the developers has made him by far the most believably depicted animal in the history of computer games. During the game, he easily gains players' sympathy, showing unpredictability and even canine loyalty. Brainstorming how to convince the animal to help solve puzzles, or complete arcade sequences together make for the most memorable moments in the game. The emphasis on the bond between the characters, combined with a very distinctive, oniric visual setting, turn The Last Guardian into an incredible experience, which would be difficult to find in other games, especially the mainstream ones.

He started with amateur websites, which he coded himself in HTML, then he moved on to increasingly larger portals. A computer engineer, but he was always more drawn to writing than programming, and he decided to tie his future with the former. In games, he primarily looks for stories, emotions, and immersion that no other medium can provide - hence, among his favorite titles, are games focusing on narration. Believes that NieR: Automata is the best game ever made.
