What's that about? A group of isolated teenagers struggle to survive in the mountains, where someone or something is trying to kill them.
Sony particularly likes action-adventure games and you will find a lot of those on this list. But they also are fond of interactive movies, where the gameplay mostly revolves around quick-time events and making difficult decisions. Until Dawn, created by Supermassive Games is the best representative of this genre available exclusively on PlayStation 4.
As the title suggests, the goal of the game is to survive until dawn. The main characters of this story are several teenagers who, on the anniversary of the mysterious disappearance of their friend, meet in a mountain hut isolated from the rest of the world. Their meeting quickly turns into a nightmare, when young people discover that someone - or something - is trying to kill them, and any help can be expected no earlier than in the morning.
Until Dawn plays with slasher conventions and instead of running away from cliches, the game is happy to use them. So teenagers behave stupidly and they separate from one another with every step instead of sticking together. There are so many jumpscares along the way that at some point we begin to wonder how all this can be put together in a meaningful whole (which the creators even manage to do). Moreover, some locations seem to be removed directly from B movies.
And it all works, making not very ambitious but quite addictive story. As befits an interactive film, there are also important choices to make, which turn out to be less significant than one might think, but during the first playthrough, they create a real illusion of influencing the course of events.
