9. Magic Dark Souls II Guide

In this chapter, you will find information concerning the basics of magic in Dark Souls 2. You will learn about its types, the characteristics of the fields of magic, the items that you need to use magic, as well as example spells, alongside with their use and effect. Also, you can find here the information on merchants that barter in magic and the way to prepare the spells to be used.

Magic is divided into three kinds

In Dark Souls 2, magic has been divided into three kinds: Spells, Miracles and Pyromancy. To use each, you need a different item. To cast spells, you need a catalyst, e.g. the Bone Staff or the Sorcerer's Staff. To use miracles, you need a talisman, e.g. the Cleric's Sacred Chime. To dabble in pyromancy, you are going to need the Piromance Flame. Below, you can find example spells listed, along with their effects.

Spells:

  • Soul Arrow - offensive magic. Shoots projectiles that deal damage from magic. This is an aimed spell.
  • Soul Spear - offensive magic. Fires a magic spear towards the target and pierces them. It deals considerable damage. It is capable of dealing damage to several enemies at once, arranged in a row.
  • Remedy - healing magic. Lifts all illness effects, like poisoning or bleeding, from the character.
  • Magic weapon - buffing magic. A spell to be casted on a weapon held in the right hand.
  • Magic shield - buffing magic. To be casted on the shield.

Miracles:

  • Heal - healing magic. Heals the hero's some of the health points.
  • Replenishment - healing magic. Gradually heals the hero's health points.
  • Lighting Spear - offensive magic. Shoots a magic spear that deals damage from lightning.
  • Homeward - the effect of this spell is the same as that of the Homeward Bone. The hero is teleported to the most recently visited bonfire.

Pyromancy:

  • Fireball - offensive magic. Shoots a fireball towards the enemy.
  • Fire Orb - offensive magic. Shoots a big fireball towards the enemy.
  • Combustion - offensive magic. In the hand of the caster, there bursts a flame. An ideal tool for fights at short quarters.
  • Fire Surge - offensive magic. Shoots a wave of flames towards the enemy.

At the beginning of the game, you can buy from two merchants. Spells can be bought from Merchant Hag Melentia (she will move to Majuli later on)in the Forest Of The Fallen Giants, and miracles can be bought from Licia of Lindeldt in the Heide's Tower Of Flame. If you want to assign a spell to a slot, you need to sit at a bonfire and select the Attune Spells option.
