5. Bonfires Dark Souls II Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
In this chapter, you will learn what bonfires are and what they are used for, as well as what is the role that they play in the game world. You will find here detailed information on all of the options, which are available from the beginning of the game. Also, you will learn here about the profits of resting at the bonfire, as well as what effects can be removed at it.
You can say that bonfires in Dark Souls 2 are a kind of checkpoints. If your character dies, you return to the bonfire that you have most recently visited. At the beginning of the game, if you sit at a bonfire, you can use several options.
- Rest - at each bonfire, which you have started, you can sit and rest. In this way, in a manner of speaking, you save your progress with the game, i.e. in case of your death, or if you use the Homeward Bone, you will return to the last bonfire that you sat at. It is worth noting that resting at a bonfire respawns the majority of monsters!
- Heal - whenever you stop at a bonfire, you automatically regain your health points, which you have lost while fighting (the bonfire does not restore the maximum of health points, if you are not in the human form and the health bar was blocked by your deaths). Once you sit at the bonfire, while being ill, the illness is automatically cured.
- Travel - from the very beginning of the game, you can travel between the bonfires that you have already unlocked.
- Attune spells - by only sitting at the bonfire, you can reassign your character's spells. Depending on the number of the available slots, you can add, remove and replace spells.
- Burn - thanks to this option, you can burn up items, of various effect, in the bonfire. The most important of these allows you to increase the level of the Estus Flask (you will notice +1 next to the flask, then). You should watch out for the other items that you throw into fire - one of them raises the difficulty level of the nearby opponents!
- Item box - a place where you can keep all of your items, for which you do not find use, for now , but you want to keep them for future. The items that you leave at a particular bonfire, will also be available at the other ones.
