Mission 7 - Battle of Berlin | Soviet | Campaign Sudden Strike 4 Guide
Last update: 07 September 2017
Mission objectives:
- Destroy the AA batteries
- Secure the train station
- Seize the Reichstag
In this mission you will participate in ending of the war. Capturing Berlin, however, will be a matter of prolonged and heavy fighting. The enemy has a lot of enemy, tanks - both medium and heavy - AT cannons and some howitzers. The Panthers and Tigers will be very dangerous. Choose the support doctrine. You won't use camouflage here, but the sandbags and repairing tanks will be very important. Take good care of your support trucks. The artillery will be of the greatest significance, and the ammo will be disappearing very quickly.
Destroy the AA batteries
Don't try to go north! The enemy is fortified well and will certainly defy your attack. Load the infantry out and mix it with armored forces. Katyusha and SU-122 right behind them. Of course, send one man in front to provide vision. With this sort of firepower of the enemy, single tanks are helpless. Move around slowly towards the target in the south. First, lay down some artillery barrage (1). When the marker disappears from the map you can be sure the target was destroyed. Take the infantry to secure the area.
From time to time, the enemy will send tanks - always make sure your back is covered with infantry in buildings. An elite Tiger II will attack you near the broken bridge (2). It's a tough enemy and it will use smokescreen to retreat. If that happens, take your tanks and use forced fire ("G") to fire on his position. Don't let him run. Your heavy tanks and destroyers should pierce even the front armor, but it will be faster to shoot the side. Proceed along the bank towards the next target. Lay down artillery fire again (3). There will be an enemy howitzer there, so send in some infantry. Above the ruins there, stand's a fortified Panther (4). Get a scout close enough to provide vision, and use the IS-2 or ISU-152 to fire at it.
Proceeding down this road, you will encounter train tracks. Right below them, near the edge of the map, stands an artillerty cannon (5). Don't risk - use your own artillery to destroy that. Below this location, on the tram tracks, are two fortified Panthers. After destroying the arty, go back to the starting position. No point fighting all the enemies.
Secure the train station
You'll get more reinforcements. They will encounter hostile infantry but will easily cope with them. Apart from air support you also have some SU-122. From now on, that's one of the most important divisions in your army. Do not cross the bridge (mines)! Approach with infantry and get rid of the mines. Instead of storming the place, slowly uncover the area using a scout and lay down artillery fire on revealed targets on the opposite bank (7).
In the meantime, use your heavy bombers to attack the two positions. The enemy has no AAs there. They do, however, have a lot of tanks and good cannons, Pak-40. Leave one scout and one assault plane for later. Use the scout whenever you want (I suggest using it to reveal the vicinity of the Reichstag). You can use one bomber for the trenches and heavy tanks further on in this mission, but this part of the city is also pretty difficult.
After breaking the first line of defense, right after the bridge, start moving all your forces across. Keep the tanks at the front with the scouts, and fortify them at the end of the buildings, right after the supply point (crates and barrels with an emblem). Another defense line is set further on, and the enemy will call reinforcements (heavy and elite tanks) (8). The only answer you can give is artillery barrage and fortified tanks. In case the situation deteriorates, use smokescreen to retreat and hope the enemy tanks will turn their weaker sides towards you.
Both locations can be attacked from the front, using a scout and artillery or tanks. However, many cannons and howitzers are facing you, fortified with sandbags. You can encircle the train station from the right (9); this will let you fight only with infantry and tanks. Only three AT guns will be there, in different intervals. Some enemy reinforcements will arrive, but it will be nothing compared to the last one. This is a good way of minimizing casualties. If you've used bombers, most of the enemy force should be neutralized. There's a fortified Pather in front of the station, as well as some troops inside. Start shooting at them from the place where the previous defense force perished (8). After securing the area of the station, you will receive the last reinforcements in this mission - 3 tanks and 4 APCs with infantry inside (8).
The freight station consists of several buildings and multiple divisions facing west (10). Almost every building hides soldiers inside, so don't be afraid to bombard everything you see. Use infantry and artillery and try to keep your tanks behind you. Let them only enter the action if enemy vehicles start to counteract your positions. Gather your troops near the bridge. There are mines in front of the bridge. On the right side there is a corner building filled with soldiers, behind it an artillery cannon, and just next to it there is a fortified Panther.
Seize the Reichstag
Before your troops cross the river, send your shooters to disarm the mines in front of the bridge. Send a reconnaissance to reveal enemy positions on the other side. Expect about 10 infantry soldiers and two cannons, Flak 88 (11). Use your SU-122 to bomb the area. Then send your infantry and tanks ahead, because as soon as your troops cross the bridge, your enemy will send reinforcements of armored units.
Your task is to rid the location of enemy troops. You don't have to destroy all the enemies on the map. The enemy has numerous positions on the sides and in front of the building. Just break through with one side and destroy the target division. The easiest way to break through the middle, but going from the right side of the map or attacking from the top of the map.
Move your army to the right as you walk a piece of it along the waterfront and then move forward with the ruins (12). Hit on the square with a destroyed fountain, a howitzer in the middle and trenches and an anti-tank cannon on the right. Tank and artillery in the street, and most infantry in the ruins on the right. The enemy will call reinforcements here several times. Those will consist mostly of infantry units and tanks (including Tiger IIs). Only when you deal with the last wave of the reinforcements (the enemy doesn't call anything more) will you be able to choose the direction from which you will attack the building.
Should you stick to the right Edge of the map, you will encounter a unit of infantry and two howitzers in the trees in the top right corner (13). If you stick to the road, you will meet another single howitzer in the forest - you can attack the enemies below you from here. The infantry won't leave the trenches.
You can also try to brak through the line of trenches in the centre (14). There will be no anti-armor cannons all the way up to the Reichstag, but there's plenty of AT infantry in the trench (15). Use the artillery and a scout to successively clear such clusters of enemies. You can also assemble a team of a few dozen soldiers, preferably riflemen, in a 3 to 1 ratio (three of your men against 1 defendant). Such a force allows you to easily clear subsequent trenches (16). The medic can heal the badly wounded, and you will save many vehicles. Before the Reichstag, the trenches are just swarming with infantry. Use a heavy artillery barrage on them. The enemy will also have many heavy tanks. This is the moment you've been saving your own armor for - provide support with artillery suppression and with infantry. It will be the last armored division of the enemy. The remaining part of the mission only requires you to clear the area of enemy soldiers and cannons.
