An example of a forest planet - Planets - Planetary Guide - Starbound - Beta - Game Guide and Walkthrough
An example of a forest planet

Planets are the main environment of the game. This is where most of the game takes place. Each celestial body has its own atmosphere, biome, temperature, weather conditions, etc. All of them are also generated by the game, thanks to which it is impossible to find two identical ones.

The difficulty level of the game is based on the level of the planets and sectors. As of now, the level of the planet corresponds to the sector in which that planet is located. This means that all of the planets in the Beta sector have level 2. The exception is sector X, where there are planets of levels ranging 5-10. The level of the planet, first of all, determines the level of the ores and the strength of the monsters that occupy that planet, but also the types of the special biomes, as well as the quality of weapons and armory that you can find there.

There are the following features to each of the planets:

  • Difficulty level - determines the strength and health of the opponents that stay on that planet. It can also determine the special conditions on that planet, like e.g. critically low temperature, or lethal winds.
  • Biome - each of the planets has one main biome. It determines the majority of conditions on the planet, like e.g. temperature or the weather conditions. Each biome also has smaller biomes that cover a part of the planet.
  • Temperature - depends on the biome type. The warm and hot biomes usually have positive temperature on the surface, where the ones that are cold and have no atmosphere require appropriate equipment, like e.g. warm clothes or suit.
  • Weather conditions - also determined by the planet's biome. Determines phenomena like e.g.: rain, snow, lethal winds, acid rain, blizzards etc.
  • Gravity - determines the planet's pull. With weaker gravity, you can take higher jumps and fall slower. This also influences the trajectory of bullets and arrows.
