In the game, there are several mechanisms at work, whose knowing is a key to success and which will make the game easier for you (especially at the higher difficulty levels). These are the following.

  • Parrying - this is the mechanism that you will learn right at the beginning of the game, during the VR training. Parrying is easy, but it adheres to principles completely different than in the other games. To parry and attack, you need to throw your own blow (light attack) towards the direction that the enemy's blow came from, e.g. if the enemy is attacking your back, you should press the attack button and movement to the back. Remember that you cannot parry attacks, before which the enemy "glows gold".
  • Blade Mode - the concentration mode in which you can aim your slash. If your energy bar (located under the health bar) is blue, you can use the Blade Mode, which will additionally slow down time, to let you deal much more damage (and perform Zandatsu, described below), and cut off limbs or to sever the armors of the enemies. The possibility of using the Zandatsu is notified with the blue flash on the screen.
  • Zandatsu - a type of execution that you can perform on your enemy, possible to perform only in the Blade Mode. On the enemies that you can use Zandatsu on, there appears a reticle that resembles square. If you manage to hit that spot with your sword, you will cut the enemy in half and you will gain the opportunity to initiate Zandatsu, which will shred the enemy into pieces and fully regenerate, both your energy, and your health bar. Use Zandatsu whenever you can.
  • Ripper Mode - The mode that you activate after the fight with Monsoon. This allows you to increase Raiden's damage, just like in the Blade Mode. The difference is that you can move around freely and slash your enemies , you are not limited to the slow, precise slashes. Raiden, in the Ripper modem deals a lot of damage, but this depletes its energy bar at a fast rate. To be able to activate the Ripper Mode, your energy bar needs to be full (it will then glow red).
