A first-person shooter featuring sandbox elements, set in a post-apocalyptic world. Rage is the first new IP created by id Software since 1996. The action takes place on Earth, though the planet was devastated by an asteroid. The protagonist has to face the new, brutal reality. Making allies among other survivors, they stand up to the military regime in order to fight for their future. The player completes subsequent story missions (rather simplistic) given by one of the parties involved in the conflict. Although the missions themselves follow the patterns established by classic first-person shooters, the protagonist is capable of using various vehicles and parts of equipment. The latter can be crafted by the protagonist, once the player has obtained adequate schematics. The single-player campaign is complemented by two multiplayer modes. The players can take part in classic deathmatches, in which vehicles can be used; they can also participate in scenarios created exclusively for the co-op mode.

A first-person perspective rail shooter based on the Rambo movie series. The game was developed by Polish studio Teyon Games known for its Heavy Fire series. The story campaign in Rambo: The Video Game consists of a series of missions inspired by movies First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III. The player can fight soulless law enforcers in Hope city, free the captives held in Vietnamese jungle and help the Afghan guerillas. The base of the game are dynamical sequences during which the player must eliminate opponents by guiding a crosshair on them and pulling the trigger. The developers created various weapons which the title character can use. They also used original dialogues from the movies.

An arcade first-person rail shooter and a spin-off installment of the bestselling survival horror series by Visceral Games, Dead Space. The game’s plot is a sort of a prequel to the events presented in the original Dead Space and explains the reasons why its protagonist, Isaac Clarke, went to USG Ishimura which was infected by a mysterious alien race, the Necromorph. Dead Space: Extraction is focused on the colonists of Aegis VII, a distant mining colony, and their fight against a deadly infection. In contrast to the game’s predecessor, the action is viewed from the first-person perspective, and the gameplay is significantly more dynamic and boils down to exploring subsequent locations, efficiently eliminating all encountered mutants. An extensive remake of Wild Guns, a classical action game that was initially released in 1994 for SNES. It was developed by Natsume in cooperation with the creators of the original. The game’s plot combines elements of western with science fiction and cyberpunk and tells the story of two protagonists: a girl named Annie, who wishes to take revenge on the Kid’s gang, and a bounty hunter, Clint, helping her. Mechanics-wise, it is a combination of arcade rail shooter and a third-person action game. While playing, we control the heroes by running, jumping, rolling, and so on, and try to aim at enemies in the back of the level. In Wild Guns: Reloaded, the classic gameplay formula was slightly polished. Apart from new arenas, opponents, and weapons, we have four (instead of two) characters at our disposal, each having their unique armaments. Furthermore, we can play in a co-op mode for the maximum of four players.

A humorous, three-dimensional rail shooter by Inti Creates studio and a sequel to 2011 Gal*Gun, a game designed for motion game controllers. We play as an ordinary Japanese high-school student named Hodai, whose life has turned upside-down after he is shot with an arrow by mischievous angel Kurona. This results in every female trying to hit on him in more than aggressive way, after as little as a single glance. To lift the curse, our hero must find his true love before the sunset and avoid getting caught by other girls. Gameplay wise, Gal*Gun: Double Peace is a classic rail shooter, with us controlling only the crosshair. We are armed with special pistol that shoots pheromones, which will drive attacking girls to euphoria and thus stopping them from confessing their love to Hodai.

A first-person rail shooter developed by Destructive Creations, a Polish studio known for the controversial Hatred. The action of IS Defense takes us to the year 2020, when Europe is attacked by the Islamic State. The players assume the role of a NATO soldier who operates a heavy machine gun, and their task is to eliminate advancing enemies. As far as gameplay is concerned, the production is inspired by the genre’s classics and such titles as Beach Head 2000. In the game, we cannot move as we please since we constantly remain on the mobile machine gun and artillery position. The game continuously adjusts the difficulty level to the player’s skill, and lets us call additional support (such as an airstrike or air support) as well as supply drops depending on our results. The game is complemented by a simple character advancement system and pretty graphics powered by Unreal Engine 4.

A rail shooter game developed by the independent Italian developer Antab Studio. GRIDD: Retroenhanced draws its inspirations from both cyberpunk and hacker culture of the 1980s. The player gets to assume the role of an operator of a battle ship that traverses the virtual reality with a task to bypass a computer defense system and defeat a dangerous Artificial Intelligence. During the game, one gets to sweep through procedurally generated maps and fight numerous enemies. As the vehicle is constantly moving forward, the player's role is limited to maneuvering up and down, dodging enemies, collecting power-ups, and targeting weak spots of particular adversaries. The basic mode in GRIDD: Retroenhanced is the Arcade Mode, in which the difficulty level continuously adjusts to player's skills. The game also features the Endless Mode, in which the player has to face unlimited enemy waves. One's actions are monitored by the scoring system, thus the player can share his achievements via the online ranking boards. The entire experience features original style somewhat resembling the iconic TRON: Legacy movie and is well complemented by a dedicated synth wave soundtrack.

A rail shooter developed by Tabasco Interactive, a Polish dev studio. The player assumes the role of John, a pilot of the Federation woken from a thousand-year cryogenic sleep initiated by an artificial intelligence called Ellie during a great war against the Rebels. His task is not only to discover how the conflict ended but also to defend humanity from a new threat. At the core of Star Horizon are grand-scale space battles in which we participate sitting at the helm of a fighter. Our task is to aim at hostiles and make evasive maneuvers to avoid collision with enemy projectiles and elements of the environment. We can also replace ship parts and mount more powerful armaments. The course of the campaign is shaped by our decisions to a large extent – the game puts great emphasis on story and developing friendship between John and Ellie, while we can side with either the Federation or the Rebels.

A refreshed version of the cult-classic rhythm game from 2001. The new edition, developed by Enhance Games studio lead by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, has been adapted to make use of virtual reality goggles, but a traditional gameplay is also available. Aside from the content present in the original game, the developers added a new location, called Area X. In Rez Infinite, the player’s task is to remove the effects of a malfunction inside an advanced AI called Eden. The game mixes the gameplay of so called rail shooters, with elements of rhythm games. As a result, we don’t control the direction where our character is headed – all we have to do is to mark groups of elements appearing on the screen, which explode, generating various audio-visual effects. The abstract visuals, characteristic of the original title, have been adapted to modern standards.

Time Crisis 4 is the next shooting of the series, started in 1997 and coming from coin-op machines. This game, like its predecessors, uses a special Guncon pistol.
