The House of the Dead is a horror-style action game with a first person perspective (FPP). The title was produced by SEGA's in-house development studio.

The House of the Dead is a horror FPS action game, which gained popularity mainly on consoles. On December 18, 1998, strange events took place in the buildings belonging to the DBR corporation, where top-secret experiments were carried out. These experiments resulted in the disappearance of the entire staff working in these buildings. Special agents Thomas Rogan and G are sent with an urgent mission to investigate the mysterious disappearances and the nature of the research of the former head of the laboratory, Dr. Curien. What they encounter on the spot goes beyond their wildest expectations.

As agent Rogan, players have to check out the secret laboratory of mad Dr. Curien, who turned people into zombies. Players have to defeat different types of hordes of animated corpses. Players have at their disposal several types of weapons and various power-ups, which are scattered around the maps. There are four game modes available: single player, boss, time attack, and a 2-player cooperative mode. More sensitive players can change the colour of the blood in the options menu.
