Resident Evil Video Game Series
Resident Evil is a series of Japanese survival horror films published by the Capcom studio. Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara are mainly responsible for its creation. It had its beginning on March 22, 1996, with the release of the game Resident Evil (also known as Biohazard) for the PlayStation console. It was during its promotion that the term survival horror was coined. The prototype of the series is the game released in 1989 Sweet Home, based on the film of the same name. Fujiwara himself was responsible for it, and many elements, such as QTE sequences or inventory management, were transferred to the series. Biohazard. Since then, the series has grown steadily, gaining more game installments, as well as film, animated and comic book and book adaptations.
The action of the title takes place in an alternative world, which, thanks to the actions of the enigmatic Umbrella Corporation, is struggling with the mysterious T-virus, turning people into bloodthirsty monsters and mutated beasts. In the game, we follow the heroes whose goal is to fight the aforementioned hostile organization and stop the virus from spreading to the rest of the globe. The first part of the series is set in a luxurious mansion in the Arklay mountains, while the next two are set in the American town of Racoon City. Subsequent installments of the series take us to other parts of the world, setting the action in Africa, Antarctica or Spain. During the course of the games we impersonate many characters, thanks to which we learn about events from different perspectives.
The main parts of the games in the series Resident Evil (marked with numbers) belong to the survival horror genre, where we observe the characters from a third-person perspective. Moving through cramped locations, we push the plot forward by collecting items necessary to solve logic puzzles, acquire parts of equipment such as weapons, ammunition or plants that restore our lives, and prudently fight the enemies we encounter. Prudently, because in the first parts of the series the game does not spoil us with large supplies of ammunition or weapons necessary for bloody butchery. This makes it many times wiser to bypass every slower enemies in order to be prepared for more dangerous opponents. This has been changed since the 5th installment of the game, less focused on the survival element, which added the option to play in co-op with another player. For that, in the sixth installment, for the first time we can aim and shoot while on the move. Resident Evil returned to its roots with Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, expanding on the formula in the 2021 sequel, Resident Evil: Village.
Brand Resident Evil goes far beyond the main games. There have been many more spin-offs and they have even found their place among mobile games. Among them we find arcade first-person shooters (Resident Evil Survivor from 2000 or Dead Aim from 2003), rail shooters (The Umbrella Chronicles from 2007 and The Darkside Chronicles from 2009), multiplayer tactical shooters (Umbrella Corps of 2016 or Resident Evil: Resistance from 2020) or other survival horror installments (Code Veronica z 2000, Revelations of 2012, and Resident Evil: Outrage 2023). In addition, Pachinko slot machines with a theme from various installments of the series were popular.
Resident Evil is among the most important brands in Capcom's portfolio. Games in the series have sold more than 100 million copies (2020 figures). Due to the great success of Resident Evil VII, remakes Resident Evil HD i Resident Evil 0 HD The studio decided to go a step further. In 2019 it released a remake of Resident Evil 2; the game received not only cosmetic changes betting on photorealism, but a subtle modernization of mechanics and controls. The title received many awards and nominations, and became a huge sales success. This prompted Capcom to decide to remake the next parts. In 2020, its premiere was Resident Evil 3 with refreshed mechanics and high-quality graphics developed using photogrammetry technology.
In March 2023, a refreshed version of the highest-rated installment of the series also saw the light of day - the Resident Evil 4, with a demo version ahead of it Chainsaw Demo. The title of the demo referred to a memorable clash in a village, in which we not only come to face its inhabitants, but also a particularly menacing individual, wielding the title chainsaw in his hands. Although the game was scheduled for release on March 24, thanks to the leak, the complete edition of the game has already reached the hands of some fans more than a week in advance.
