Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster freshens up with polished visuals and new additions, but it still clings to old survival horror mechanics that may alienate new players.
The main pros of the game
- Story and Lore: Many players appreciate the intriguing backstory and lore that the game provides, especially as a prequel to the original Resident Evil.
- Atmosphere and Graphics: The game maintains a good atmosphere reminiscent of classic Resident Evil titles, with decent graphics and sound design.
- Puzzles and Gameplay Mechanics: Some players enjoyed the unique puzzles and the dual-character gameplay mechanic, which adds a layer of complexity to the gameplay.
- Nostalgia for Fans: Long-time fans of the series often find value in experiencing the game for its connection to the overall Resident Evil narrative.
The main cons of the game
- Inventory Management: A significant number of players criticized the inventory system, citing it as tedious and cumbersome due to the limited slots and the absence of item boxes for storage.
- Control Issues: Many reviews mention awkward controls, particularly when managing two characters simultaneously, which can lead to frustrating gameplay experiences.
- Enemy Design: Some players found the enemies to be overly resilient (bullet spongy) and frustrating to deal with, particularly in certain encounters.
- Technical Issues: Reports of bugs, crashes, and poor performance (especially related to resolution and alt-tabbing) were common among reviews.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Item Boxes: Many players expressed a desire for the classic item box system that allows for easier inventory management, which was absent in this installment.
- Better AI for Companion Characters: The AI for the non-active character was often criticized for being ineffective and leading to unnecessary deaths.
- More Balanced Gameplay: Several users noted a lack of balance in terms of ammo and healing item distribution, making some parts of the game feel unfairly difficult.
- Improved Control Customization: Players mentioned issues with control settings not saving properly, which detracted from the overall experience.
Conclusion
- Overall, while Resident Evil 0 has its charms and appeals to dedicated fans of the series, it suffers from several gameplay and design flaws that can make it a frustrating experience for new players or those expecting a smoother and more modern gaming experience.
