Resident Evil Origins Collection for PS4, PC and XONE is a set of two classic titles of the cult Resident Evil series by Capcom thoroughly remastered with next-gen platforms in mind. The bundle consists of Resident Evil HD, a refreshed edition of the 1996’ classic for PlayStation, and Resident Evil Zero HD, that initially came out in 2002 exclusively for Nintendo GameCube. Both games were released in 2015 and 2016 respectively for PC as well as the 7th- and 8th-generation consoles.
Story
In Resident Evil HD, we assume the role of an operator of the elite S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) unit, Chris Redfield, or Jill Valentine, who are sent to Raccoon City, which is faced with an epidemic, in search for the lost Bravo squad. With limited ammunition and few survival items, the players have to solve the mystery behind the protagonist’s colleagues disappearance and face various traps as well as hordes of undead.
Resident Evil Zero HD is a prequel to the entire series and its events take place one year before those of the above-mentioned title. When alarming reports about unusual events that occurred on the outskirts of Raccoon City came in, the S.T.A.R.S. send Bravo squad led by Rebecca Chambers to investigate. As a result of a helicopter crash, the protagonist finds herself in the midst of a true apocalypse and is forced to fight for survival. To do so, she joins forces with Billy Coen, a former lieutenant of the navy, who had been sentenced to death.
Gameplay
As far as gameplay is concerned, both titles are the essence of the Resident Evil series. The later games of the franchise focused more on action, and less on the atmosphere known from the first two. The action is observed from a third-person perspective, and our tasks boil down to traversing subsequent locations, solving puzzles, and occasionally fighting. While Resident Evil HD offers two separate (although interwoven with one another) story-lines for each character, in Resident Evil Zero HD, we control both protagonists at the same time and are able to switch between them at any time to make use of their strengths and weaknesses.
Game modes
Resident Evil Zero HD offers a completely new mode called Wesker, which was absent in the original Resident Evil Zero. It allows us to assume the role of Albert Wesker, the commander of the S.T.A.R.S. unit, and one of the main antagonists of the later installments of the series. So it's possible to experience the story from a point of view of an alternative character, one that has significantly more ammo and incredible powers.
Technicalities
Resident Evil Origins Collection for PS4, PC and XONE offers thoroughly refreshed editions of classic hits that utilize the hardware capabilities of modern platforms. Both games have significantly enhanced visual effects as well as 1080p textures created from scratch that preserve the original looks of in-game locations. Sound effects were fully remastered, as well. Thanks to 5.1 sound support, they intensify the gaming experience. The players can also choose between the original 4:3 screen mode and wide-screen (16:9). Moreover, the veterans of the series can use the original controls or the modernized ones known from the latest full-fledged games in the franchise.
