Bastion
RPG
April 7, 2015
An action RPG developed by Supergiant Games - a studio established by Amir Rao and Gavin Simon, who both are former employees of Electronic Arts. In the game, the player assumes the role of a hero named Kidd, who one day wakes up in his bed drifting among the remains of the world, in which he used to live before. The young lad embarks on a journey to find other survivors and provide them with shelter. The world of Bastion that is drifting through the void is a very dangerous - it crawls with monsters that our hero has to face using an elaborate arsenal of both melee and ranged weapons. Moreover, since particular locations literally are hanging in mid-air, a moment of distraction might result in Kidd falling off the map. Bastion stands out from similar productions because of its method of delivering the story (the actions of the main protagonist are described in real time by a narrator) and the original visuals featuring colorful, hand painted, and highly interactive backgrounds. Interestingly enough, in spite of the fairytale-like style of the game, Bastion tells a grim story about the apocalypse. The game has been recognized with many prestigious awards.

Slayaway Camp
Puzzle
November 6, 2018
Slayaway Camp is an unusual turn-based logic game developed by an independent studio called Blue Wizard Digital. When working on their game, the developers have drawn their inspirations from the 1980s horror movies and at the same decided to mock their cheesy themes. The player assumes the role of a psychopathic murderer tasked with killing the teenagers who relax on their summer holidays. The maps are relatively small and composed of square fields. The characters can move only in straight lines and stop only if they encounter an obstacle. With these limitations in mind, the player has to reach their destination, avoid traps and other threats, and lead their victims and police officers to the deadly traps. With time, one can unlock more playable characters and gadgets used in the game. The game features a humorous style, in which all the characters and locations look as if they were built from large bricks, while the murders themselves are more funny than terrifying.

In the game, we assume the role of a bounty hunter who tries to restore order in the kingdom, at least partially. The gameplay mechanics haven’t been significantly changed and are still rooted in the hack ‘n’ slash genre. The protagonist’s tasks include performing subsequent quests that involve exploration of the kingdom, fighting hordes of monsters, gathering treasures, and developing skills with the obtained experience. The equipment system now lets us destroy items to acquire raw materials needed to enhance weapons.
