On this guide page we describe the 4-4-2 formation, one of the best formations in FUT 22.

Last update: 29 September 2021

On this page of the guide to the FUT 22 mode in FIFA 22, you'll find a detailed description of one of the best, most effective formations in FIFA 22 Ultimate Team: 4-4-2. We suggest what tactical settings you should choose for each game plan and what kind of instructions you should direct to specific players.

The 4-4-2 formation consists of 4 defenders, 2 centre midfielders, 2 side midfielders and 2 strikers. The 4-4-2 formation has been very popular for years due to its immense offensive potential (two strikers) and considerable defense.

Ultra Defensive game plan

This game plan is used during the beginning of the match to get to know your opponent's playstyle, or when you have a safe lead of at least two goals, don't want to take any more risks and there's not much time left until the match ends.

Defensive play:

  1. Defence playstyle: balanced;
  2. Width: 40;
  3. Depth: 40.

Offensive play:

  1. Constructing actions: ball possession;
  2. Creating opportunities: balanced;
  3. Width: 50;
  4. Players in box: 3 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 1 bar;
  6. Free kicks: 1 bar.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: stay back, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Centre midfielders: stay back, balanced runnings on goal, normal interceptions, stick to position, cover the centre;
  4. Side midfielders: basic defence support, balanced width of play, balanced support, balanced running on goal, normal interceptions;
  5. Strikers: balanced width of play, mixed offense, normal interceptions, basic defense support.

Defensive game plan

You can use the defensive game plan when you have a 1 or 2 point lead and don't want to take any risks, with around 30 minutes of the match left. This plan allows you to play safely while still being able to perform effective attacks.

Defensive play:

  1. Defense playstyle: Balanced or Drop Back (if you're not doing well with defense);
  2. Width: 40;
  3. Depth: 30 or 40 (setting a lower value will give your opponent more space in the midfield).

Offensive play:

  1. Action construction: balanced;
  2. Creating opportunities: balanced
  3. Width: 50;
  4. Players in box: 4 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 3 bars;
  6. Free kicks: 2 bars.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: stay back, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Centre midfielders: stay back, balanced runnings on goal, normal interceptions, stick to position, cover the centre;
  4. Side midfielders: come back on defence, balanced width of play, balanced support, get into box for cross, normal interceptions;
  5. Strikers: balanced width of play, play on point, normal interceptions, basic defensive support.

Balanced game plan

Your team starts the match with this plan by default. A balanced plan allows effective defensive play as well as dangerous attacks and counters.

Defensive play:

  1. Defence playstyle: balanced;
  2. Width: 50;
  3. Depth: 60 for defenders with good pace (over 70 points). 40 or 50 for slower defenders.

Offensive play:

  1. Action construction: balanced;
  2. Creating opportunities: balanced;
  3. Width: 60;
  4. Players in box: 6 or 7 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 3 bars;
  6. Free kicks: 3 bars.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: stay back, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Central midfielder (more defense-oriented): stay back, balanced running on goal, normal interceptions, stick to position, cover the centre;
  4. Central midfielder (more offense-oriented): balanced attack, balanced runs to goal, normal interceptions, guard positions, cover the middle;
  5. Side midfielders: come back on defence, balanced width of play, get in behind, get into the box for cross, normal interceptions;
  6. Strikers: balanced width of play, play on point, normal interceptions, basic defensive support.

Attacking game plan

The attacking game plan is useful when the match ends in about 30 minutes and the opponent scored one more goal than you. You should know that the attacking game plan tires out your players faster.

Defensive play:

  1. Defence playstyle: balanced;
  2. Width: 50;
  3. Depth: 50.

Offensive play:

  1. Action construction: balanced;
  2. Creating opportunities: running forward;
  3. Width: 50;
  4. Players in box: 4 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 3 bars;
  6. Free kicks: 3 bars.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: stay back, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Centre midfielders: stay back, balanced runnings on goal, normal interceptions, stick to position, cover the centre;
  4. Side midfielders: basic defensive support, balanced width of play, get in behind, balanced running on goal, normal interceptions;
  5. Strikers: balanced width of play, mixed offense, normal interceptions, basic defense support.

Ultra Offensive game plan

This game plan is used when the match ends in a few minutes and the opponent still has a score advantage. It's important to know that the ultra offensive game plan drains your players' stamina very quickly and makes you vulnerable to counters if you lose the ball.

Defensive play:

  1. Defensive playstyle: constant pressing;
  2. Width: 50;
  3. Depth: 70 for defenders with good pace (over 70 points). 60 for slower defenders.

Offensive play:

  1. Constructing actions: quickly constructing actions;
  2. Creating opportunities: running forward or direct passes;
  3. Width: 60;
  4. Players in box: 7 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 4 bars;
  6. Free kicks: 4 bars.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: balanced attack, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Central midfielders: stay back, balanced running on goal, normal interceptions, stick to position, cover wing;
  4. Side midfielders: basic defensive support, balanced width of play, get in behind, get into the box for cross, normal interceptions;
  5. Strikers: balanced width of play, mixed offense, normal interceptions, basic defense support.
