On this guide page we describe the 4-2-3-1 formation, one of the best formations in FUT 22.

Last update: 29 September 2021

On this page of the guide to the FUT 22 mode in FIFA 22 you'll find a detailed description of one of the best, most effective formations in FIFA 22 Ultimate Team: 4-2-3-1. We suggest what tactical settings you should choose for each game plan and what kind of instructions you should direct to specific players.

Formation 4-2-3-1 has been considered one of the best for years, and it's no different in FIFA 22. This formation consists of 4 defenders, 2 defensive midfielders, 3 offensive midfielders and 1 striker. The main advantage this formation provides is allowing you to play the ball between narrowly positioned offensive players. Two defensive midfielders bolster the defense and intercept the ball in the midfield.

Ultra Defensive game plan

This game plan is usually used during the beginning minutes of the match to test your opponent, or when you want to keep the score you find favorable.

Defensive play:

  1. Defence playstyle: balanced;
  2. Width: 40;
  3. Depth: 30 or 40, so to not leave in the midfield.

Offensive play:

  1. Constructing actions: ball possession;
  2. Creating opportunities: balanced;
  3. Width: 40 or 50;
  4. Players in box: 3 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 1 bar;
  6. Free kicks: 1 bar.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: stay back, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Defensive midfielders: stay back, balanced defense, normal interceptions, cover center;
  4. Offensive midfielders: return to defense, balanced running on goal, guard position, normal interceptions;
  5. Striker: balanced width of play, mixed offense, normal interceptions, basic defense support.

Defensive game plan

The defensive plan can be used when you have a 1-point lead, or through most of the match if you don't want to take risks and prefer to stay in control of the ball. The defensive game plan allows you to play safely but also cause effective offensive actions.

Defensive play:

  1. Defence playstyle: balanced;
  2. Width: 40 or 50;
  3. Depth: 30 or 40, so to not leave in the midfield.

Offensive play:

  1. Constructing actions: balanced or ball possession;
  2. Creating opportunities: balanced or possession;
  3. Width: 60;
  4. Players in box: 5 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 2 bars;
  6. Free kicks: 2 bars.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: stay back, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Defensive midfielder (more offense-oriented): balanced defense, balanced offense, normal interceptions, cover center;
  4. Defensive midfielder (more defense-oriented): stay in the back, balanced defense, normal interceptions, cover center;
  5. Central offensive midfielders: return to defense, get into the box for cross, stick to position, normal interceptions;
  6. Striker: balanced width of play, mixed offense, normal interceptions, basic defense support.

Balanced game plan

The balanced game plan is a setting your team starts the game with. One of the advantages of this game plan is a solid defense still giving opportunities for dangerous counterattacks.

Defensive play:

  1. Defence playstyle: balanced;
  2. Width: 50;
  3. Depth: 60 for defenders with good pace (over 70 points). 40 or 50 for slower defenders.

Offensive play:

  1. Action construction: balanced;
  2. Creating opportunities: varied or possession;
  3. Width: 60;
  4. Players in box: 6 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 3 bars;
  6. Free kicks: 3 bars.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: stay back, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Defensive midfielder (more offense-oriented): balanced defense, balanced offense, normal interceptions, cover center;
  4. Defensive midfielder (more defense-oriented): stay in the back, balanced defense, normal interceptions, cover center;
  5. Offensive midfielders: basic defensive support, balanced running on goal, stick to position, normal interceptions;
  6. Striker: balanced width of play, mixed offense, normal interceptions, basic defense support.

Attacking game plan

The attacking game plan is mostly used if you need to score a goal with around 30 minutes of the match left. You need to keep in mind that the intense, offensive playstyle will quickly tire your players out.

Defensive play:

  1. Defense playstyle: pressing after losing the ball;
  2. Width: 50;
  3. Depth: 70 for defenders with good pace (over 70 points). 60 for slower defenders.

Offensive play:

  1. Action construction: balanced;
  2. Creating opportunities: running forward;
  3. Width: 60;
  4. Players in box: 6 or 7 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 4 bars;
  6. Free kicks: 4 bars.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: stay back, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Defensive midfielder (more offense-oriented): balanced defense, balanced offense, normal interceptions, cover center;
  4. Defensive midfielder (more defense-oriented): stay in the back, balanced defense, normal interceptions, cover center;
  5. Offensive midfielders: basic defensive support, balanced running on goal, stick to position, normal interceptions;
  6. Striker: balanced width of play, mixed offense, normal interceptions, basic defense support.

Ultra Offensive game plan

This game plan is used when the match ends in a few minutes and you still need to score several times. Unfortunately, by giving it all you've got during your offense you must expect your players to get worn out quickly, and a counterattack is very likely if you lose the ball.

Defensive play:

  1. Defensive playstyle: constant pressing;
  2. Width: 50;
  3. Depth: 70 for defenders with good pace (over 70 points). 60 for slower defenders.

Offensive play:

  1. Constructing actions: quickly constructing actions;
  2. Creating opportunities: running forward or direct passes;
  3. Width: 60;
  4. Players in box: 7 bars;
  5. Corner kicks: 4 bars;
  6. Free kicks: 4 bars.

Instructions:

  1. Centre defenders: stay back while attacking, normal interceptions;
  2. Side defenders: stay back, normal interceptions, mixed attack;
  3. Defensive midfielder (more offense-oriented): balanced defense, balanced offense, normal interceptions, cover wing;
  4. Defensive midfielder (more defense-oriented): stay back, balanced defense, normal interceptions, cover wing;
  5. Offensive midfielders: basic defensive support, balanced running on goal, stick to position, normal interceptions;
  6. Striker: balanced width of play, mixed offense, normal interceptions, basic defense support.
