- In a nutshell: a post-apocalyptic tactical game with a dog as a main character
We couldn't forget about the fans of a more tactical gameplay – so we have added some tactical strategy games to our list. Overland is an indie video game developed by Finji studio that offers a nostalgic journey through the post-apocalyptic landscape and combines game mechanics known from such series as X-COM with elements of survival and roguelike.
This tactical game puts you in control of two randomly generated characters. However, one of the created characters may be... a dog. Together with your partner, you have to set off from the East coast of the United States and head West. However, this will not be an easy expedition, as the world presented in the game has been overrun by bizarre, insect-like creatures that consider your characters as their next meal.
The game perfectly builds up the dense atmosphere of a mysterious apocalypse, constantly introducing new threats. This is also supported by a high difficulty level, which encourages you to avoid combat as often as possible, rather than to confront your enemies. During the journey you can meet other characters who may want to join your team. The composition of your team can change dynamically, because sometimes it won't be possible to travel with all encountered characters. The fact that you have to depend on a means of transport in the form of a car, which can break down at any time, makes the gameplay even more captivating.
Overland is one of those titles that don't offer an intriguing and sophisticated story, deliberately leaving a lot of space for player's imagination. However, the dense atmosphere and interesting layout of in-game features, especially from the perspective of a tactical gameplay model, should satisfy any enthusiast of this unique genre.
