Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios 2023
  1. Game genre: RPG
  2. Movie/series genre: Fantasy
  3. Potential creators: Peter Jackson
  4. Is a movie actually being made? No
  5. How long it's been waiting: 25 years

The picture shows quite a successful part three by Larian (at least judging by feedback from early access), the classic Baldurs were created two decades earlier. And they still enjoy the highest esteem by fans of RPGs. This may be evidenced by the fact that extended editions for the first and second parts, and even a "Baldur's Gate 1.5" of sorts, were created just over a ten years ago.

If by some miracle you've never heard of these games before, let me explain – they're classic isometric RPGs, the kind where you gather a sizable party and venture forth to gain experience, fight dragons and demon spawns, and discover the great mystery waiting at the end.

Baldur movies have always been rather unlikely. Especially considering that building the fantasy realm would probably be a The Lord of the Rings kind of undertaking, while the global recognition of these two brands is incomparably different. In addition, the rights to the franchise changed ownership several times, and the negotiating the rights to use all parts of Baldurs would be a pain. However, if anyone would ever want to do it, Peter Jackson seems the perfect director for the task. Who else, if not him, could build an epic fantasy world with such care?

Other hits of the golden generation of classic RPGs are also waiting for the screen. I am sure that the creators of the LoL show would also like to consider Arcanum. But here, again, the case of copyrights would be very awkward. Planescape: Torment has been waiting for master Burton for years. Because only he could make such a niche game readable also for moviegoers who are not interested in games.
