DCS AH-64D Apache: Begginer's Tips
- DCS: AH-64D Apache is an extremely realistic flight simulator. Don't expect to be able to fly, shoot, and complete missions as soon as you start playing it. Each stage, from starting engines, piloting the helicopter without crashing it, to using navigation and weapons, requires a lot of knowledge and learning.
- In DCS: AH-64D Apache it is practically impossible to play with just a keyboard or joypad. To control the helicopter, you will need at least a joystick with a twist handle and throttle - a total of four analog axes. The best experience provides HOTAS - Hands On Throttle And Stick with joystick and separate throttle quadrant. Rudder pedals (called anti-torque pedals in helicopters) are also very useful addition to the home setup.
- Don't expect to learn everything in one go. It is best to focus on the individual stages (e.g. take-off, flying with navigation, landing, using the 30mm gun, etc.). Once you master one, proceed to the next.
- The list of keybinds in the Settings can be overwhelming, but the vast majority of the actions are only useful for those who have a cockpit in their house. However, when using a HOTAS set with a joystick, do not try to assign all the necessary keys immediately - there are simply too many of them. As in the previous point, it is worth focusing only on those buttons necessary to operate the system you are currently learning.
- The controls of the Apache helicopter are extremely sensitive. The basis of success is make slight, delicate and slow movements with the controllers. - The Apache helicopter is a two-seater. When flying alone in single player mode, you can switch between the seats of the pilot and the CPG operator and use the George AI Helper, which is an interface with a command radial menu for the virtual second crew member. George can pilot the machine throughout the mission or search and destroy targets as CPG. You can also switch between posts freely, depending on the situation. - Use the active pause button (LShift LWin Pause by default). It will stop the helicopter in the air without the risk of crashing and, at the same time, allow you to use all buttons in the cockpit.
