Your main working place is in the town hall and, unfortunately, it is always busy.

The place, where you can receive reports on missions and dispatch followers on new ones is, the commander's desk. It is in your garrison, in the main room of the town hall. You can also access tables at the outposts in the other locations around Draenor. Usually, you can find them in a building.

After you right-click on the commander's desk, you access the follower management window. First, reports of the finished battles display. Then, you are presented with the tab showing the available missions. Usually, there are several of them available. For completing each one, you receive certain profits and most often, this means additional experience for your followers, gold and resources, but you can also get missions that allow you to obtain gear for your character.

Clicking one of the missions takes you to the field, where you pick the follower that is capable of completing that mission. The most important thing is to check your opponent's ability. For the mission, you should choose the follower that has the ability to counter such an ability. In the case of some of the missions, you may have to dispatch, e.g. three followers, where each one can counter one of the opponent's abilities. It is a good idea to look up the percentage chance of completing the mission. It is best to dispatch the followers on mission, when the probability of success is 100%. In some cases, however, being able to counter all of the opponent's attacks amounts to, e.g. 70% probability of the mission's success. This means that the experience level of the followers is too low and it is better to consider, whether it is a better idea to dispatch them on some easier mission.

Missions vary in length - Picking and dispatching followers on missions - Detailed guide - World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor Game Guide

Missions vary in length. The shortest ones take 30 minutes to complete so, it is a good idea to start them right after you start the game, so you can claim your reward towards the end of the session. Some of them, however, are as long as 12 hours. Therefore, it is best to dispatch followers, on such missions, before you exit the game, or in the evening.
