Tomes and grimoires can be found in every mission (usually well-hidden) available in Warhammer: Vermintide 2 - they offer special bonuses such as additional XP or better boxes. However, they also have negative impact on the gameplay.

Tomes are books that grant you additional XP provided that at least one tome was carried till the end of a mission - this bonus is active for all players, not the one who carried a tome. Each map has three tomes but one player can only carry one tome - your team must cooperate in order to get them all. Tomes' disadvantage is that they take a slot for a medical tool and a healing potion slot - this means that you lose a little bit of your healing abilities. Remember that tomes can be thrown on the ground - you can put it on the ground and pick up a medical tool or a healing potion to heal yourself.

Grimoires increase the quality of your lootboxes received at the end of a game (provided that you reach the end of a mission with a grimoire in the inventory) - thanks to this item you can get better items (this bonus works for every party member). Each map has two grimoires but their disadvantage is much worse than that of tomes - a grimoire in your equipment reduces health of every party member by 33%. This means that two grimoires reduce your health by 66%. Also, a grimoire that was placed on the ground disappears forever (the same happens when a hero falls to the ground) - the health penalty gets removed. Of course, a grimoire needs a slot in your equipment - this time you need to sacrifice a potion slot (those that increase your speed or damage). The health penalty can be reduced by carrying an item that grants curses resistance.
