Chapter 1 - Episode 1 The Mad Ones - Guide The Council Guide & Walkthrough
Last update: 30 March 2018
This page contains a walkthrough for the chapter 1 - Off the coast of England - along with consequences of the important choice.
- Discover what Holm knows about my mother
- Stay and listen to Washington
You should take a closer look at the following topics:
- Paying attention to details.
- What are the rules of confrontations?
- Opening the letter from Giuseppe Piaggi.
The chapter starts in the port beneath Lord Mortimer's castle. You start a conversation with two characters - duchess Emily Hillsborrow and cardinal Giuseppe Piaggi.
Business with Lord Mortimer. |
Personal reason. |
Absolutely... |
Turn the questions back to the Duchess. |
After that the main hero will have a vision. Watch the short cut-scene and then speak with Emily Hillsborrow.
Go towards Emily. Approach the small balls of light while you are on your way - there, you can find items to collect or elements that will be commented by the hero. After leaving Emily another dialog starts. During this conversation you have to choose your class (check "Skill trees" and "Which tree and skills are worth choosing?" pages).
Not at all, so lie to her! |
Not at all, sorry. |
The most probably place must be... Paris? |
Pretend to be hurt for her not believing you. (requires Manipulation) |
Chat her up, it'll make her lose her train of thought. (requires Diversion) |

Paying attention to details
During the dialog you can try a new mechanic that allows you to observe certain details of characters - they can help you later in that conversation. Glowing dots appear on Emily (just like in the picture above) - you have to click on them. Note - you have a limited time for that. These situations are frequent during the game but they require certain skills. This mechanic won't start if you don't have the right ability.
After a while the conversation will end. The duchess goes to the castle. You can control your character again - go towards the servant with a mask who stands near the stairs. Speak with him:
Where is Lord Mortimer? |
What do you know about my mother? |
Are there any witnesses? |
Have you found anything here? (requires Questioning) |
Let me have, the handkerchief, I'll take care of it. (requires Logic) |
You'll give me back the handkerchief. (requires Conviction) |
You will kindly give me the handkerchief. (requires Manipulation) |
Let us say no more, then... |
You have the handkerchief but you need to get more information about your mother. Go to the mail box - the place where you started the game. Pay attention to the balls of light that appear on your way and interact with them. Thanks to that you can get a few items.
Find a clue option can be used if you have Logic ability from Detective tree. Thanks to that you will find the information immediately. Otherwise, you will have to check the letters. Pay attention to To Mr. Samuel Riter Dauchois option - this is the most important letter that will move the plot forward. However, the rest of the letters also contain valuable information.
After getting information from the letter you can head to the castle immediately - go towards the stairs where you spoke with the servant. You can also decide to examine the docs. Pick up the iron bar presented in the picture and head towards the gate - it is located right from the stairs that lead to the castle.
In front of the entrance gate you will see a damaged board from the platform. You can tear it off with a crowbar - you'll find your mother's bag there and get more information.
Approach the gate and check your options. You can open the gate by using Subterfuges skill from Occultist tree (Pick the lock option). Otherwise, you have to choose Use an iron bar. Sadly, this won't work but you get one more option - Force it open with the bar. This option is available if your character has Agility skill.
In conclusion - you need either Subterfuges or Agility skills to get through the gate. Inside you can find a few useful items and hints - examine this area carefully and activate all interactive points.
Regardless of whether you searched the docs or not, you have to head to the castle. Watch a short cut-scene and speak with Giuseppe.
What are the rules of confrontations?
This conversation is your first confrontation (the picture above shows how it looks like). There are three lines and an arrow with a circle displayed in the upper part of the screen - this indicates that you have to choose three important dialog lines during this conversation. At the end there is an even more important part - the finale. Each wrong answer is noted (here you can make three mistakes - "3 Blunders left"). Exceeding this number fails a confrontation - you won't get any important information nor items. Remember that you can use items during dialogs and, e.g. refill Effort Points that are required to activate abilities.
You don't have to pick every right answer - a finale is the most important part. The conversation can still go on even if you make a mistake when choosing the "regular" answers. However, this changes in a finale - making a mistake reduces your number of available Blunders. You still have a chance to win a confrontation by selecting the right answer but remember to not exceed the Blunders limit.
Remember that choosing a dialog option related to a skill ISN'T always the right choice. You should also remember that they sometimes can be the choice - this means that you can have a situation where you lack a certain skill which, in turn, blocks you from giving the right answer.
The table below shows the right answers for the confrontation with Giuseppe:
Yes, she's been here for several weeks now. |
Art Collector (requires Etiquette) |
It depends on what it contains (requires Questioning) or Pretend I don't want it (requires Manipulation) |
Ok, no worries. |
After a successful confrontation you receive a letter to your mother. Go to the people standing near the fireplace. You can take a book from the table - the game allows you to select a book that you want to read before starting each new chapter. This will increase your skills. A conversation will start near that fireplace:
My mother. |
About a letter. |
About the surprising main door. (requires Etiquette) |
Let's avoid the subject. (requires Diversion) |
She's gone missing. |
Invent something. |
Soon, you will have to make another important choice. You have to decide whether you want to Stay and listen to Washington or you want to Discover what Holm knows about my mother. Depending on your choice you will participate in different dialogs and get different information.
Discover what Holm knows about my mother
You go with Holm and Giuseppe to a different room. There, you have to participate in a conversation:
What is the story exactly? |
Does he know my mother? |
What did my mother come here for? |
What is the link between Hillsborrow and my mother? |
Who could have held a grudge against my mother? |
Is there anyone else missing other than my mother? |
Elizabeth Adams sits near the fireplace. Soon, she will start to feel sick:
Wait there, I'll take care of this! |
Don't get involved! |
Quick diagnostic (requires Science) |
Notice something strange (requires Occultist) |
Observe the young lady (requires Vigilance) |
Let her breathe! |
Elizabeth feels better. You can get information about her from Holm:
Who is she? |
What's wrong with her? |
After this short conversation you go back to the rest of the guests.
Stay and listen to Washington
After choosing this option you stay near the fireplace and accompany duchess Emily and president Washington.
Tell me more about this Mortimer. |
Where does Emily know my mother from? |
How did he come to know her? |
When did he see her for the last time? |
Rather political? (requires Politics) |
Or the mysteries that surround us? |
Do the other in the Order know, do you think? |
And what if Mother has left the island? |
After the conversation you are joined by the rest of the guests.
Opening the letter from Giuseppe Piaggi
Regardless of your choices the guests will leave this place. Your only option is to go to your room. Head to the right hallway and walk a bit until you see a plate with your name. Enter inside. Here, you must decide whether you want to open the letter from Giuseppe to your mother:
- Unseal the letter - you get information but Giuseppe will want to add something to the letter in the next chapter. This means that you will have to either lie to him or show the opened letter and lose his trust.
- Leave the letter closed - you won't get information but you also don't lose Giuseppe's trust.
After that you have to go to bed. This completes the first chapter of The Council.
