The stereotypical division of character archetypes in RPG games assumes the existence of a brave warrior, an agile thief, and a wizard proficient in magic. No Rest for the Wicked, the new game from Moon Studios, is no exception in this respect, although the way it implements classic builds is quite unusual. On this page, we show how to start using spells and magic in the game.
What are runes?
Runes are special items that can be installed onto weapons in No Rest For the Wicked. Each installed Rune provides access to special, powerful attacks that spend Focus - a special resource that replenishes during combat (Focus bar can be found above the health bar, in the upper left corner of the screen. When talking about magic in the game, Runes serve as "spells" in No Rest for the Wicked. Rune magic is somewhat of an addition to melee combat, and the Focus bar that replenishes during encounters can be treated as "mana" However, if you want to play as a "classic" wizard, there is an option that can allow, at least partially, to do that.
How do Staffs work?
Staff is one of the types of weapons available in the game. This two-handed weapon when used in melee deals very low damage that is definitely not up to par when compared with large swords, maces, or war hammers.
Its strength lies in runic attacks. Even the simplest weapon of this type found very early in the game - Gnarled Staff - allows you to use 2 interesting runic attacks.
- Fireball - a fire projectile dealing a lot of damage;
- Channel - a skill that allows converting health into Focus points.
Of course, there are more runic attacks to which you receive access further into the game (more on linking Runes can be found on the page linked above). Using a Staff is probably the closest No Rest for the Wicked offers in terms of playing as a wizard. Although you still need to engage in close-range fights to replenish Focus, you will be able to cast magic spells.
