Hades: Saving the game - Is it possible? Hades guide, tips

This Hades guide page explains if manual saves are allowed and how to save your game state.

Last update: 05 September 2021

This page of the guide to Hades answers the question if it is possible to save game status. We also explain when new save files can be created and whether it is possible to operate on several different files to save the game.

We recommend you also to take a look at a separate page titled Closing the game - do we lose progress? on which we explained how to avoid loosing your progress and how to safely close the game.

Hades allows the use of four save game slots - Hades: Saving the game - Is it possible? - FAQ - Hades Guide

Hades allows the use of four save game slots. The slot is selected when you start a new game and from now on all your progress will be recorded on it.

The remaining slots can be used to start your campaign from scratch and create a different character with a different build in mind. You can also use additional slots e.g. to play Hades with Hell Mode enabled, offering a much greater challenge.

Your progress is automatically saved throughout your playthrough - Hades: Saving the game - Is it possible? - FAQ - Hades Guide

Your progress is automatically saved throughout your playthrough. Each new override of the current game state is signified by icon in the top right corner of the screen. The game does not provide an option to save the game manually.

The game makes automatic saves primarily when entering each new location (or switching to a different screen in the House of Hades) and should also create another save file after dealing with a group of opponents in a particular chamber. Saving the game takes place quite often, much more often than other popular games with roguelike elements.

The game allows you to easily determine when the last save file was created - Hades: Saving the game - Is it possible? - FAQ - Hades Guide

The game allows you to easily determine when the last save file was created. This information is displayed in the pause window - we marked it in the above screeenshot.

If you want to be sure that your progress has been saved correctly, turn off the game immediately after one of the automatic saves. The information in the pause window should then say that the progress was saved less than a minute ago.

After you restart the game you can choose the save file you are interested in - Hades: Saving the game - Is it possible? - FAQ - Hades Guide

After you restart the game you can choose the save file you are interested in. Each slot used contains information about a particular game state record. They regard:

  1. the type of location / chamber where the last save file was created - you will return to this location when the game restarts and you won't always have to start back at Hades House,
  2. total number of attempts to escape,
  3. total number of accumulated Darkness (the name of one of the resources in the game),
  4. the date of creation of the last file.

The dumpster icon allows you to remove the save file - this is an irreversible action and you can lose even a few dozen hours of progress.

Additional hint - if you play Hades on PC or PS4, you can "cheat" and copy save files onto a USB. This may have different applications. For example, saving the game before the clash with the boss and copying the saves on USB can allow you to repeat a possible lost battle without having to go through the whole land again. Hades however, is constructed in such a way that the chances of survival of the hero in the same battles gradually increase. We advise you to play fair in order to gradually develop Zagreus.
