Game modes in FIFA 20 FIFA 20 guide, tips
Last update: 09 October 2019
In FIFA 20, besides the well-known game modes like FIFA Ultimate Team, Champions League, Manager's Career or Player's Career, there are several brand-new modes that will provide many hours of fun. New game modes in FIFA 20 are Mystery Ball, Swaps and King of the Hill. Moreover, in the new FIFA, you can take part in street competitions in Volta Football, where you will play as well-trained players. Due to the small size of the court and the limited number of players, the gameplay in Volta Football is very dynamic. This section of the guide to FIFA 20 describes all game modes.
- Practice arena
- Kick Off
- Volta Football
- Champions League
- Tournaments
- FIFA 20 Ultimate Team
- Manager career and player career
Practice arena
The practice arena in FIFA 20 is a mode that every novice player should check out. You have to complete several different types of plays, and in each of them, you will have to perform several, increasingly more complex tasks. You complete these games by accumulating the required number of points. In this mode, you can select the following training games:
- Basics
- Passes
- Dribbling
- Defense
- Shots
Kick Off
Kick Off mode should by familiar to all fans of FIFA games. Kick Off mode in the newest entry was further enriched with several additional options like Volta Football, Mystery Ball, King of the Hill or Swaps. In this mode, you can play as all the teams available in FIFA 20. Interestingly, some modes can be accessed from FIFA 20 Ultimate Team mode. You can also play them with your created team.
Classic match
Classic "quick match", which can be played by any teams according to the standard rules. Classic match can serve as a warm-up before online matches with other players. This mode is perhaps the most commonly used for playing with another player on the same screen.
House rules
By selecting this option, the player can create a set of rules that will be applied during the match. The rules are plenty - everyone should find something for themselves. We can distinguish the following variants of the game:
- Long range - all goals scored from outside the penalty area are doubled.
- Survival - every time one of the teams loses a goal, it will also lose one random player from the field. Each team can lose up to 4 players. Moreover, each team can get no more than 2 red cards. Another red card ends with the loss of that team.
- Headers & Volleys - only goals scored from headers and volleys count. You can also get scores from free kicks and penalties.
- First to - the player can determine the required number of goals to win the match. For example, here you can define a golden goal rule or see who can be the first to score 3 goals. If none of the players score the required number of goals within 90 minutes, there will be extra time. If extra time doesn't end with the required number of goals there may be a penalty shootout.
- No rules - in such a match, there are no fouls and offsides. Players cannot receive any cards.
Swaps
Swaps is one of the new gameplay options available in FIFA 20. You can play it directly from FIFA Ultimate Team. As the name suggests, after joining the match, some players from your team will be replaced by players from the opposite team. These players can be recognized after orange t-shirts. Interestingly, in the Swaps mode, the players' condition goes down very slowly. However, you can't make any substitutions. Note! A substitution performed before the match will usually deprive your team of the best players, and in return, you can get mediocre players. This is especially problematic at higher difficulty levels.
King of the Hill
King of the Hill is another brand-new mode in FIFA 20. As with the Swaps mode, you can play the game with your FUT team. King of the Hill has quite strict rules that must be followed to score goals:
- There are rectangles marked with a dotted line - they remain in this place for a while. They can also be seen on the mini-map.
- The player's task is to keep the ball in the marked area long enough to charge the football level. There are 3 levels available - each of them must be charged in an increasingly smaller area.
- After charging the ball level, you can try to score a goal. The first level gives the player 1 goal, and the third (maximum) is worth 3 goals! If the ball isn't charged, you won't score a goal.
- You don't need to keep the ball to charge it - you can, for example, pass the ball from one player to another by making it go through the field.
- Note! The charge ball gauge drops over time, so you should pay special attention to it. After scoring a goal, you have to start the whole process from the beginning.
Mystery Ball
Mystery Ball is the third new game mode introduced in FIFA 20. Mystery Ball is a very unusual mode in which a lot can happen. During the match, players will receive random bonuses, which can be divided into the following categories:
- Movement speed bonus
- Bonus that affects the strength and accuracy of the shots
- Bonus that affects the accuracy of passes
- Bonus that affects the dribbling ability
- All bonuses at once
- A random mystery ball that can give a player up to 3 goals with a single goal
All bonuses have a level from 1 to 3. For example, a level 3 movement speed bonus will make your players run so fast that you may find it difficult to control the ball. In turn, the bonus to the shot at the 3rd level means that you can score a goal from almost any place on the pitch.
UEFA Champions League
In this variant, the player has the opportunity to play one match of the UEFA Champions League group, a two-legged tie of the final or the UEFA Champions League final. As with the classic quick match, UEFA Champions League mode is a good way to warm up before online games.
Cup final
An option in which the player is able to play in the final meeting of any cup. For convenience, all cups have been grouped in alphabetical order, so the player will quickly find the one they are interested in the most.
Two-legged tie and series of matches
In this variant, the player has the opportunity to play the classic two-legged tie during which they play one match as the host, and one as a guest. The team that scores more goals after two matches wins. In case of a draw, the team that scored the most away goals wins. A series of matches is about playing 3 to 5 matches that will determine a winner.
Volta Football
Volta Football is the latest novelty available in FIFA 20 and by far the most exciting one! Thanks to the Volta Football mode, the player can take part in real street tournaments and try their hand at a completely different game than those played on traditional pitches.
The character creating process in Volta Football
The first step after starting Volta Football mode is to select the player and configure them. Thanks to numerous options available in Volta Football, players can create unique characters. Among the many modification options, we have:
- Player's body and head
- Outfit
- Tattoos
- Animations
Game modes in Volta Football
In Volta Football, you can play in many ways - this means that you can spend hours in this mode. In addition, Volta Football has various pitches - some of them are really small, and others, for example, can be limited by walls. In Volta mode, the player can choose between the following game options: Volta Tour, Volta Story Mode, Volta League, single match.
How to play Volta Football?
Street football is very different from matches played on a regular pitch. Matches in Volta are very dynamic and are played on much smaller fields, which can also have some additions like, for example, walls from which you can bounce the ball off of. Below are some tips to help you during the matches on the street:
- Use walls - the walls on the street pitches don't only serve as field boundaries. Instead of passing the ball directly to the player, you can bounce the ball off of the wall and make the ball around the opposing team's player.
- Keep defenders in the back - in Volta, some matches are played without a goalkeeper. Because of that, it is very important to keep the defenders in the back because someone has to protect the goal. When you receive the ball as a defender, start the action by passing it to the striker and leave the defender in place.
- Shooting at the goal - goals in Volta mode are very small meaning that the goalkeeper covers a significant area of the net. Because of this, shooting from a long distance isn't the best solution, especially since the ball can bounce off the wall and get captured by a player from the opposite team. It is also worth noting the fact that after one of the updates, shots from your own half of the field have an increased chance of failure. Before you shoot at the goal, try to get as close as possible and go around the opposing goalkeeper.
- Long passes - in Volta mode, you can't get an offside, so long passes are a good idea.
Champions League
By choosing this mode, the player will be able to take part in matches between the international European football clubs and fight for the UEFA Champions League Cup. Champions League matches consist of 2 phases.
- Group stage - 32 teams play in 8 groups, 4 in each of them. All teams play against each other twice. 2 teams that scored the most points from each group can advance to the next stage.
- Play off - single-elimination system. Teams from a given pair play each other twice - once as a host, and once as a guest. Only two teams can play the final match for the cup.
Tournaments
By selecting the tournament mode in FIFA 20, the player has the option to take part in single-player tournaments from different countries or create their own league or cup tournament. For example, the player will have the opportunity to play in the Premier League, Bundesliga or La Liga. Women's Cup games are also available.
FIFA 20 Ultimate Team
FIFA 20 Ultimate Team is a complex system of games in which players have the opportunity to create their own dream team and collect cards of players who will strengthen their line-up. Moreover, the player has the ability to use special disposable cards, which, for example, can give them complex training, injury treatment, extend contracts, etc. In addition, in FUT 20, the player can track the market where they can sell their players and buy new ones. Players cards can also be obtained by purchasing special packs or by participating in tournaments. You can read more about FIFA 20 Ultimate Team mode in a separate section of this guide.
Manager career and player career
The career mode in FIFA 20 will provide the player with many hours of fun. The player has the opportunity to become a manager and take on the burden of team development or make their career as one of the players. Career mode in FIFA 20 has been expanded with, e.g. new tactical systems, extensive press conferences, animations of the Champions League and Europa League draws and award animations.
Manager career
Manager career is a very interesting single-player mode in which you need to deal with almost everything - team's line-up, player transfers, youth development and even selling t-shirts. Before you start a career as a manager, you can decide whether you want to lead a strong club and create a real dream team, or start with a lower-class team and gradually climb up. If you are a fan of football manager games, you will certainly spend a lot of time in FIFA 20.
Player career
Player career allows you to lead a player to fame and make them a real legend. Interestingly, in player career mode, we may decide to retire and take up the post of a team manager.
