Chicory: A Colorful Tale is primarily recognized by fans of indie games. This is the game from the same publisher that gave us Night in The Woods, which managed to gather a devoted following. More specifically, it's an adventure game that's also... a coloring book. If you like unusual mechanics, you've come to the right place.
Chicory has all the features of a decent adventure game: lots of places to explore, lots of side missions, a well-fleshed-out main storyline, and lots of obstacles on the way to your goal. However, it offers one non-standard accessory: a brush around which the story revolves, and which, of course, we have to wield. Soon after receiving it, we realize that the whole map is actually a huge coloring book. It's completely white, and each element is outlined with thick black lines, and occasionally we can also come across some shadows. With the help of a brush, we give each place on the map the look we want to get. We can color, draw, make new patterns on available objects or even color the characters.
Coloring pages are something that relaxes many people, which can be seen, for example, in the constant popularity of anti-stress coloring books for adults. Here, we can combine this relaxing activity with an interesting adventure and plunge into the colorful world of Chicora. What if someone doesn't like coloring? Then they absolutely don't have to; we may ignore this option and leave the world white. The game requires you to use the brush only to interact with items important for exploration, so we are not obliged to color every tree; instead, we can focus on the plot. On the other hand, if you do enjoy coloring, Chicory makes great use of this mechanic and allows long hours of relaxation between discovering further parts of the story and fighting opponents.
