Monkey Island is not only the classic adventure game, but also a classic franchise in the history of video games, even if it became a bit rusty by now. Its origins date back to 1990, and the adventures of the unfortunate pirate Guybrush Threepwood saw a total of six games, including the one listed here. Taking on such a hefty subject, especially since the formula is decades-old, is always a risky idea – firstly, it's difficult to match the idealized version of the past, and secondly, you can only find a small group of dinosaurs who are still playing. In this case, however, everything worked out fine, certainly because the game was created the authors of the original.
Return to Monkey Island turned out to be a successful return to the point & click genre, where nostalgia and tradition have been skillfully intertwined with modern trends. A flexible level of difficulty and minimalist interface should be convincing regardless of age and expectations. But this is just the icing on the cake, as the strength of Guybrush's new adventures is the captivating plot, great dialogues, in addition great acting, and traditionally – an excellent sense of humor. Nostalgia hits hard, of course, and old-timers will have the most fun, but younger fans shouldn't be disappointed either.
From characters you may have forgotten about, to clever lines that pull the story together, to even more challenging puzzles that keep you invested in figuring them out, Return to Monkey Island is a treasure trove of fun. For fans that have waited so long for this sequel, the wait has been worth it as the game not only closes the chapter on a classic series but it also lets you revisit a past that is unique to every player.
