Looks complicated? "Yes." Was it working? Sure!

This time it's not the NES, but the Xbox. Steel Battalion Controller is a gamepad created especially for one game – Steel Battalion (who would have thunk!). The controller went on sale in 2003, and was created by Capcom. It had as many as 40 buttons that allowed players to control the mechs in the game. Buttons were used for shooting, pedals for acceleration and braking, levers changed gears and moved the mech left to right. You could literally feel like you were in control of a powerful machine.

The game, which supported the Steel Battalion Controller was a mech simulator released in 2002 on Xbox. The huge controller, in addition to looking impressive, also allowed the player to control the characters more effectively (there were 20 of them in the game) during skirmishes. Admittedly, this is probably the most impressive controller on the list, especially since it seemed quite functional.
