Call of Duty Ghosts introduces a new game mode, called Extinction. It is a mode with four players in mind, although there is nothing to prevent you from playing it solo - if you want to have any chances of surviving it, it is recommended that you play it in a four-player squad.
In Extinction, your squad's aim is to, apart from decimating the waves of aliens (unlike in the previous installments of the Ghost series you fight aliens instead of zombies), is to destroy alien hives spread around the map, using a drill which is available for your team from the very beginning of the game. After you deploy the drill, the fight for survival begins - there are waves of dozens of aliens, and your squad's aim is to defend the drill for a pre-defined period of time (longer and longer with each swarm that you destroy). After some time, the hive is destroyed and your task is to take on another one.
The map at which this takes place is divided into several stages. During each of these stages, your objective is to destroy the abovementioned swarms and, after enough of them have been destroyed, you will reach a place blocked by the Barricade Hive . This obstacle is too big to be destroyed with the drill and you need to use the helicopter's support , which needs to be protected against the enemy attacks until the hive is destroyed.
Apart from the completing of the main objective, i.e. destroying the hives, it is very important to complete Challenges that appear each time after you deploy the drill (they usually last until the hive is destroyed), for the completion of which your squad receives an additional skill point. Their difficulty level varies from easy ones (e.g. killing a given number of aliens with a given weapon) to very hard (e.g. keeping your weapon's accuracy at the level higher than 75%).
Just like in the multiplayer mode, in Extinction you can predetermine your sets of perks and skills that you are going to utilize in combat. There are for classes to choose from: Weapon Specialist, Tank, Medic and Engineer. Each class has is strong and weak points so, before you start the game, each squad should discuss their selection - there is no point in having four medics in a squad.
Apart from class selection, you can also choose appropriate perks from five categories. These are: Pistol Type, Ammo Type, Team Support, Strike Package and Equalizer. Additionally, during the play, you will be rewarded with skill points that you can use to improve of the effectiveness of a class or perks.
