BioShock 2: How long does it take to complete the game? bioshock2 Guide
Last update: 22 May 2022
This page answers how long will it take to complete BioShock 2. The answer isn't straightforward because a lot depends on your approach to the game and what you want to do in it. Things, like exploring every location in 100% or getting the platinum trophy can significantly increase your play time.
- The campaign itself will take you about 11-12 hours. The overall time can be shortened if you are familiar with the first part of BioShock - thanks to this knowledge, you will immediately understand the rules of many gameplay mechanics since they haven't changed at all or remained very similar. It may take longer to complete the campaign if you play on the high difficulty level, where winning most battles will be much more difficult. Fortunately, BioShock 2 allows you to freely save the game and use Vita-chambers to resurrect the hero.
- Exploring all the locations in 100% can extend the overall play time by about 4 hours. BioShock 2, like its predecessor, offers the option to display the maps. They are very useful in exploring Rapture and finding areas that haven't been searched yet. Exploration is rewarded with supplies, collectibles/secrets (primarily audio logs), new tonics and plasmids, as well as vending machines and weapon upgrade stations.
- If you want to encounter every Little Sister and Big Daddy, you will have to spend another 2 hours. This mechanic offers some old elements as well as new ones. After you defeat a Big Daddy, you can accompany a Little Sister and protect her while she collects ADAM. Additional obstacles are the Big Sisters that appear every time you deal with all the Little Sisters in a given chapter. Any confrontation with a Big Sister can be compared to a demanding boss fight, although you can prepare for them (laying traps, etc.).
- You can get the platinum trophy during a single playthrough - this will take you about 20 hours. However, it should be noted that this won't be easy, because you have to get all by playing on a high difficulty level. This forces you to, e.g. fight the most difficult versions of battles with all the Big Daddies and Sisters. The more complex trophies require you to e.g. fully research all the enemies. Recording enemies with a camera is more difficult than taking pictures of them, and you also have to finish your research before they stop appearing or before you finish the campaign (you can't continue playing after completing the main storyline).
- The multiplayer mode is only available in the original version of the game (it was removed from BioShock 2 remaster included in BioShock: The Collection), and it can provide at least a few hours of extra fun. There are also some achievements/trophies associated with multiplayer (this only applies to the PS3 and X360 versions).
- BioShock 2 has two large single-player expansions, and each of them lasts several hours. Protector Trials are challenges where you have to deal with waves of opponents. Minerva's Den is more interesting because it consists of three fairly extensive levels. It is worth noting that DLC trophies aren't required to get the platinum. This way, you don't need to earn 100% of the trophies to unlock the platinum trophy.
