The latest game from the Don't Nod studio strongly focuses on narrative aspects. One of the most important manifestations of this is the inclusion of a number of morally ambiguous decisions in the story that affect the presented world and certain aspects of the gameplay. On this page, we present all the most important decisions present in the main story, and we will also try to show their later consequences.

Sacrifice the cannibal Jacob?

In the first serious haunting case, your task will be to investigate the death of trapper Benedict. After discovering the chilling truth about what his partner Jacob has done, you will be faced with a choice: punish the cannibal for his crime or let Benedict go to the afterlife and spare the murderer:

1. If you decide to sentence Jacob, Red will sacrifice the cannibal's life, which will positively affect the path to resurrecting Antea. Jacob will, of course, disappear from the map and you won't be able to talk to him anymore.
2. If you decide to ascend or banish the spirit of Benedict, the possession haunting the cannibal will end and the man will slowly begin to come to terms with reality. After finishing this story, you will still be able to talk to Jacob, and you will also witness the man burying the body of his former companion. These choices will bring you closer to the final ascension of Antea's spirit.

Oath: Ascension or Resurrection?

After closing the case of the cannibal, Red and Antea will have a moving conversation about the future. During it, you will be asked to take an oath in which you will declare whether you will strive for the peaceful departure of the woman's soul to the other world, or perhaps you will try to cheat death and bring the vanquisher back to life.

This decision does not have serious plot consequences. Even when declaring one thing, nothing stands in the way of using the opposite solution. The choice rather affects the attitude of the main characters, who will refer to the chosen path from time to time during conversations.

Sacrifice the cook-spy?

In the camp in the Dark Forest, you will learn the story of Prudence - a spy pretending to be a modest cook, working on behalf of the French. Behind the woman hovers the ghost of her tragically deceased husband, wishing to protect his beloved even after death. After discovering the secret of the spouses, you will be faced with the choice of ending the investigation:

1. By killing Prudence, you will make her deceased husband angry - he will attack you as a Specter in the nearby cemetery. Of course, the spy will no longer be present in the game as an NPC.
2. By sending Thomas' spirit to the afterlife, you will gain Prudence's sympathy and trust. The spy returns to her hut in the camp to mourn her husband in peace. Some time later, however, you will receive a side mission from her called "Forge and Forgive", in which you will hunt for documents and Captain Pennington's seal that will help the woman start a new chapter in her life.

Sacrifice the fake blacksmith?

The camp in the Dark Woods also hides another secret. While learning about the Heatytons' marriage, you discover that Nellie's real husband was murdered on a ship while traveling across the Atlantic. His personality was assumed by a certain Arther - a petty English thief and lover of Mrs. Heaton. The following issue can be resolved in several ways:

1. By killing the false blacksmith, you will incur the dislike of his wife. Mrs. Heaton will still be living in the forest camp, but she will be reserved towards you, and the prices in her store will significantly increase.
2. After killing Nellie, the fake blacksmith will take over his beloved's role as a salesman and return to the camp . However, he will hold a grudge against you, and the prices in his store will be significantly higher. Similar to the previous option, this choice will bring you closer to the reincarnation of Antea.
3. By returning the spirit of the murdered husband to the next world, you will gain the sympathy of the lovers. After some time, Nellie will propose to you to obtain materials from Fort Jericho as part of the side quest Iron Shortage. Saving lovers and exorcising the spirit will affect the ending regarding the ascension of the dead banisher.

Sacrifice or save Thickskin?

After defeating the first big boss of the game, the Beast, you will have to choose how to deal with quarreling Newsmith sisters. Here is what each option does:

1. By sacrificing Thickskin for her earlier controversial decisions, we actively remove this character from the rest of the story. Kate is not thrilled with the turn of events and runs away from the spirit of Deborah appearing before her. Over time, the younger sister will take over the role of Thickskin as the camp manager in the Dark Woods.
2. If you spare Thickskin, a somewhat calmed Kate will attempt to reconcile with the spirit of her beloved. Some time after the end of the thread, you will also receive a short epilogue summarizing the further fate of the sisters. The younger one will leave the camp, and as part of a side mission, you will be able to look for her.

Which path to choose?

After completing the Dark Woods storyline, the game will ask you to choose one of the paths leading in opposite directions. The northern one will take you to the military Fort Jericho, while the southern one will take you to the sun-drenched area of the Harrows. Sacrifice or save Captain Pennington?

In the frosty region of Mount Pleasant, you will come across the story of the inhabitants of the military Fort Jericho, who are haunted by ghosts from a nearby mine. After defeating the boss at the bottom of the shaft, you will be faced with a choice regarding Captain Pennington's fate:

1. If you decide to sacrifice it, Helen, the leader of the rebellion, will take command of the Fort. The captain will disappear from the game as a character, and you will be treated to an epilogue in which the military unit heads towards the future under the flag of a new leader. This choice will affect the ending in which you want to resurrect Antea.
2. Sparing the captain will result in Helen's immediate arrest. Pennington will remain in power, and some time after the end of the story, the rebel will free herself from prison, giving you a chance to do a side quest.

Sacrifice Caleb?

While focusing on the plot revolving around the demonic activity in the Harrows region, you will learn about Caleb Wattson's story. A failed resurrection ritual performed by the man trapped the spirit of his wife and brother in his body. After solving the puzzle, you will be faced with a choice regarding the further fate of the Wattsons:

1. By sacrificing Caleb, you will send his soul to the void along with his brother's spirit. Ruth will find peace from love problems by moving towards eternity. This choice will have a positive impact on the ending with Antea's resurrection.
2. Alexander's Ascension or Banishment will positively impact Antea's Ascension path. However, Caleb, plunged into sadness, will commit suicide some time after completing the quest. You meet him again some time later in the city cemetery, where he returns as a dangerous spirit.

Sacrifice or save Governor Haskell?

The Harrows region in the south of the map is where you will learn the story of Fairfax Haskell. During the investigation, you will reveal the sins that the Governor committed in the past. As you approach the end of the story, you will have to decide on his future:

1. Fairfax's sacrifice will bring you closer to the resurrection of Antea. The politician pays for his misdeeds with his life, and his son - Lammy, will take over his role as the new settlement manager.
2. Sparing the Governor makes the local community angry - they will drive him out of the settlement. As part of side activities, you will be able to help him rehabilitate and get back the settlers' trust.

Renewing the oath: Ascension or Resurrection?

At a certain stage of the game, the pair of main characters decide to renew the oath they made to each other at the beginning of the gameplay. As a player, you have the opportunity to keep the word given to Antea shortly after her death. On the other hand, you can change your mind and head towards the opposite path.

Again, the promise made will not directly affect your freedom in making decisions. You must be aware, however, that at the end of the game your choices will be evaluated in the context of the oath you have taken.
