The following page of the guide to Age of Empires 4 provides a walkthrough of The Fall of Xiangyang mission in The Mongol Empire campaign. You will learn how to defend the trade routes from the Chinese invasion and how to conquer Fancheng and Xiangyang.
During this mission you can unlock the Boom Boom Pao achievement. You can read more about it on a separate page of this guide: Trophies/Achievements.
Defending the trade routes
After starting the mission, hire at least 3 additional Traders in The Silver Tree and assign them to the Markets marked on the minimap. This will give you a bonus to the goods you import.
Recruit idle Villagers to collect food and set up a religious tent by the Ovoo.
Divide the troops in front of your fort into 2 groups and send them to defend the 2 camps marked on the minimap. Start making new horseback units and set up Rally Points at the Outposts. Hire some Shamans and send them to help defend the forts.
Don't use up all of your stone supply for now. You need to collect 1000 pieces to build a special trebuchet.
Raids on ally camps will become stronger over time. Enemy troops will have more and more war machines. Therefore, you should attack Fancheng soon. The sooner you conquer the city, the sooner the attacks on the trader forts will end.
Conquering Fancheng
Hire new infantry units and add them to the army that's in the fort together with its leader Ismail. Buy upgrades for your army, create some Shamans and ballistic machines. Then, send that army under one of the bridges to Fangcheng.
At this point, you should have already collected 1000 pieces of stone. Select Ismail and build Huihui Pao. It is an extremely powerful trebuchet with a huge range.
Start destroying all the towers by the river first. Then destroy one of the city gates and part of the walls to get inside more easily.
Next, have your infantry repair the bridge. Eliminate all enemy units on the bridge, then climb the walls and defeat all troops that defend Fancheng. Use the trebuchet to start destroying the Barbican Landmark.
Use your leader's special ability to extend your range of view for 2 minutes and discover the position of enemy troops.
Once the Landmark is demolished and your units have been healed by the Shamans, proceed further into the city.
Try to first destroy all towers and buildings that shoot at your army. Watch out on the walls near Xiangyang, too, as the gunpowder fired from the Landmark by the bridge can reach the warriors there.
After eliminating the defenders of Fancheng, prepare to conquer the next city.
Conquering Xiangyang
Destroy the gate to Xiangyang and all the towers by the walls. The trebuchet placed in front of the bridge should easily reach the Keep. Once the Keep is demolished, you can start rebuilding the bridge.
In the meantime, buy additional troops and set up Rally Points at the bridge to Xiangyang. You can also send some warriors there who have previously defended the trade forts. At this point in the mission, the camp raids should be over.
When you enter the bridge, you will be attacked by a squad of heavy infantry and archers. They will also have a few ballistic machines. Try to lure the enemy infantry in front of the bridge to avoid being hit by the archers.
Once you get to the city, there will be a squad of heavy cavalry waiting for you. Light infantry will also show up after a while.
Using the trebuchet, destroy two towers and the wooden gate that leads to the last Landmark in Xiangyang.
After destroying the fortifications, eliminate the rest of the Chinese army and demolish the Imperial Palace.
