Intrigue, Family, and Statesmen of characters in Total War Thrones of Britannia Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia Guide & Tips

After opening the faction window, you have access to a large amount of information on the first tab. The Family Tree & Politics tab provides a lot of important clues about your family, as well as other characters in your court, and allows you to interact with characters in your kingdom by using intrigue. Your family and statesmen are part of your court, that is, are figures performing important functions, such as generals and governors. Thanks to these characters, you can shape the fate of your kingdom.

The royal family usually includes sons, brothers, and daughters (due to the short time span). The family often has a better loyalty level to the faction leader, but at the same time, their influence is very high. This is a dangerous combination, that can cause problems. Characters with higher influence than the ruler like to cause problems or suffer loyalty drops.

Any family member or statesman who has a wife can enlarge his family. You can choose your own wife yourself, but other unmarried characters will, from time to time, inform you about a planned wedding. The faction leader may intervene in this situation and annul their marriage, but this will be met with certain penalties, such as loss of influence or loyalty. You can marry your daughters off to someone from your court or to members of other kingdoms. This way, you can strengthen the ties between two nations.

You can change the heir to the throne to another member of your family, but the predecessor loses a few loyalty points. Take care, and make sure that your changes are thoughtful, so as not to lose the loyalty of a character in an unnecessary way. You can also adopt a statesman (meaning someone from outside the family) and appoint him as heir to the throne. It will be met with severe punishment from your biological siblings, but if you do not have children or brothers, or they have hopeless statistics, it can be a wise and necessary solution.

If you intend to set up a new army or assign a new provincial governor, and you no longer have available characters, 3 candidates will be presented to you. After being chosen, they will become part of the court. There will never be a lack of candidates, but you can only accept three during any given turn. In the next turn, the empty candidate places will be filled up with randomly generated characters.

The Intrigue tab

When you choose a character from your court, all possible actions for the selected character will be highlighted. Every action requires money, so remember to maintain an appropriate state of the treasury. A few of these actions often involve additional expenses, so it is always worth having around 500-1000 coins in reserve.

Here is the list of actions that can be undertaken in the intrigue panel:

  1. Declare Heir - this is a very simple activity that allows you to change the heir to the throne. You will not use this option often, but sometimes it will be necessary (e.g. if the leader does not have any children). You can choose an adult or a child, or even someone from outside your family if you choose to adopt this character into your family first.
  2. Adopt - any statesman can be introduced into the ranks of your family, but this will be met with an unfavorable reaction of your biological family and they will suffer a small loyalty decrease. Sometimes it will be a necessary step, if you do not have children or your current successor is not the best candidate.
The potential wife that our ruler found for one of our subjects is not the best candidate... 1. Seek Wife - each member of your court (even a statesman) may have to marry at your command. After paying a certain amount, you will see a potential candidate. You do not have to choose her, but you can only perform this action once per turn. It is worth choosing a wife whose features will be compatible with the function of a given character, e.g. a Governance or public order bonus is ideal for a governor.
  2. Divorce - sometimes you will have characters that already have wives or the traits that the wife provides are no longer needed. Thanks to this action, you can free your servant from such an inconvenience. Sometimes this will involve loss of influence or additional expenses.
  3. Arrange Marriage - This action works the same as in the case of "Seek Wife", but is used for the female part of the family.
How to gain loyalty: torture or bribe with promises? In the second case, the leader will lose an influence point. You have to make a difficult decision, although such a situation is not a common sight. - Intrigue, Family, and Statesmen of characters in Total War Thrones of Britannia - Characters - Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia Game Guide

  1. Secure Loyalty - You will often use this action because it allows you to quickly and easily raise the loyalty parameter of a selected character. It is worth having a large number of influence points or money (minimum 500 gold). If you bribe your subjects often, you will launch a special event that will increase corruption in the realm, although it will affect other characters positively.
  2. Assassinate - If a character has become uncomfortable or you know that he is going to rebel, murder is the best option. Of course, you must reckon with the consequences of such actions, which may turn against you.

  1. Hold Feast - The only action that is available only to the faction leader. You can increase your influence in this simple but expensive way. It is worth having extra money to raise influence even further and to avoid a less profitable feast result.
  2. Lower Influence - Thanks to this action you are able to lower the level of influence of a chosen character, at the cost of your leader's own influence points. Thanks to this, you will be able to moderate some of the actions that result from this difference. It is worth having extra gold before attempting this, and you should be prepared for some unwanted consequences.
  3. Strip Estate - This is the only opportunity to deprive someone of landed property, that you can then pass on to someone else. The estates provide influence and loyalty, so it is worth considering such an undertaking before committing to it.
